It’s time for Snippet Sunday and the weather outside bloody hot. Still. I’m hiding inside and it’s good because I have edits to do. But I always get excited when a thunderstorm brews outside.
I have a new release (well, a new re-release as a stand-alone) and I’m showing it off. It’s a short, it’s a cute PNR mystery and it’s associated with my Callowwood Pack series.
In this snippet, Det. Rhiannon Mulvaney is trying to get to the bottom of the dognapping case.
~~~~~~
Detective Rhiannon Mulvaney narrowed her eyes at the distraught young man with a thatch of curly brown hair and freckles, trying for patience. Why the hell did I take this case again? Dognapping wasn’t usually a way to make a detective’s career, and this appeared to be shaping up as a wild goose chase. Or wild dog chase, as the case may be.
“I’m serious. This car came out of nowhere, swerved to hit me and the dog, then the passenger tried to shoot me.” The guy waved at the wooden slats of the fence behind him. “We jumped out of the way, and they sped off.”
Rhiannon nodded. “Did you get the make or model of the car?”
“Of course I did.”
Glory save me from arrogant boys with dogs. “And that was?”
“It was a black or blue minivan. Maybe dark gray. Looked kinda like a dolphin with a sloped front end.”
She ground her teeth. So I’m looking for a dolphin minivan that could be blue, gray, or black. Great. “Did you catch the license plate?”
“Nevada plate, C O K 1 something. I didn’t see the last of it.” The guy shook his head. “You gotta catch these guys. This is my friend’s dog, and he’s a champ. They shot at us.”
“We’re doing all we can, Mr. Beecher.” Her partner Detective Mark Cannon, pronounced with a long “A”, gave the man a reassuring smile despite the dog’s growl at him. “We’re investigating several of these sorts of cases.”
“If you remember anything else, give us a call.” Rhiannon handed him her card just as another man bustled up.
“What the hell is going on here?”
The newcomer was tall, broad across the chest, and carried authority like he’d been born with it.
Well, hello there, handsome. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel.
Here’s the blurb for THE CALLOWWOOD CANINE CAPER:
Aaron Wulf is a loner, an alpha werewolf. And he’s content with his life until his roommate brings a champion Cocker Spaniel into his home to protect it from dog-napping while its owner is out of town.
Detective Rhiannon Mulvaney has a real dog of a case. Someone’s dog-napping Kennel Club champs, and she’s determined to catch the culprits. But when she meets Aaron, the case gets much more interesting.
Maybe police work isn’t just for the dogs.
This scene suggests a complicated setup.
Ooh, I have all kinds of questions now, inagoodway. Such an intriguing snippet!
