Letter to the Editor: OPM Lies

Oh man. Have you seen the news? I’m sure you’ve read the latest lies the Office of Personnel Management has posted at the Muskrat’s direction. The thing is, all of them are lies and can get civilian government workers in trouble if they take the deal. You can read the whole set of lies right here: https://www.opm.gov/fork/ As someone who used to work for the federal government (and who’s been furloughed a few times), it’s actually illegal to get another job (in the same field) while working for the government. Hell, you can’t even collect unemployment or get another job while furloughed. If you did, you set yourself up to get fired. Additionally, while they promise to pay workers for doing nothing (yeah, they’re trying to cut gov’t spending so this makes no sense), what happens when the Fed’s budgetary continuing resolution comes due March 21st 2025? Will the workers be furloughed? It’s F47’s (Mango Mussolini) usual thing to furlough people while he throws a tantrum over budget. You think he won’t do it again? And when he does, those who are “retired” will be cut off from funding, and won’t get it back. These are all lies and the older workers know it. Most of the people I know who work for the federal government are saying, “Nope. You want me to leave, you have to fire me for refusing to leave my job in the public sector, doing work for the public. He can stick his fork where the sun don’t shine.” So I wrote a little something inspired by Charlie Daniels Band’s Devil Went Down to Georgia. It’s as silly as the dumbshittery the Muskrat is proposing. Enjoy. ~~~~~~~ The Devil went off to DCHe was lookin’ for jobs to stealHe had to cut costs before all was lost,And needed to make a deal. He came across government workers,Sitting at their desks and payin’ their dues. The Devil jumped up on social mediaAnd said, “Folks, lemme tell you the news.” “You can get paid for doin’ nothin’Even find another job.Take deferred retirement andGo on vacation with your mom.” The workers eyed him narrowlyAnd said, “That sounds all sorts of wrong,But tell us more, we want to be sureYou’re not stringin’ us along.” The Devil looked affrontedAnd adopted an innocent aire.“I swear to you, there’s no other shoe,It’s in black and white right there.” He held up a gossamer scrollWith glittering, sparkly ink,“My boss says yes, you don’t have to guess,You don’t even have to think. Take the deal we’re offering.Just sign on the dotted line. You won’t regret it, my boss he said itHe won’t burn you this time.” But the older workers who’d been furloughedEnough times by that same boss,Said “wait a minute, we’ve been in itAnd this is a load of dross. He’s shut down this here governmentMore than a time or twoWe didn’t get paid, for days and days,And we’re supposed to just trust you?” The Devil spouted promises,Of repose and money, too.He said, “you’re done, have some fun,And we just want the best for you.” The older workers scoffed outrightAnd suspiciously crossed their arms“I’m stayin’ right here, doin’ my jobFor the public, despite your charms. “You want us all to go away,And abandon the public work? You’ll have to fire us, and look real sus,Explaining why you’re such jerks.” The Devil gaped and gasped in surpriseNot sure how to face this crowdSo he raised his hand, made a Nazi standAnd fled back to Twitter, cowed. ~~~~~~ “Devil Went Off to DC”Copyright © 2025Siobhan MuirAll rights reserved

Ludwig  K.R. Van Horn Patty Dump Honorable Mention Silver James | Website Siobhan says: What I liked about this tale was the conviction in the female MC. So often our world is male-centric, and I hope, as she ages and grows, that she’ll stick up for herself and find someone who values her for her, not just because she’s whatever he thinks she is. Great kick-ass heroine story. winner announcement Week 645 Winner K.R. Van Horn Siobhan says: A bittersweet tale, sorrowful but powerful in its sentiment. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙒𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙚 Snow drifted down outside the window where we sat—delicate, fleeting. We said, “See you again soon.” But we both knew that wasn’t true. I watched you go, and as your shadow disappeared around the corner at the end of the street, I saw your scarf still draped over the back of the chair. I picked it up and breathed you in. Your perfume, the winter air, something unmistakably you. I knew you wouldn’t turn back. And I knew I shouldn’t follow. Couldn’t. I knew your scent would fade eventually. And your smile would grow distant, like a voice in another room. Time does that. I took the long way home, my solitary footsteps etched in the snow. Couples passed by, arm in arm, and I remembered how you used to say snow felt like magic. I wonder if it’s snowing where you are now and if it still feels that way. Do you still tilt your head back and let the flakes melt on your cheeks? When I entered the apartment—the apartment we’ll never share—I hung your scarf on the hook in the hall, and I heard you whisper, “Remember that when I’m gone, you’ll find me in the quiet spaces.” “I know,” I whispered back. I looked around and imagined our daughter—the one we always dreamed of but who will never be. She was dancing through the living room. Her laughter echoed in the empty space, and for a moment, I almost saw her.~~~~~~~ Congratulations Three Time Winner K.R., and Honorable Mention Silver! And for me, the story just had an “IT” factor that nudged it to the top of the list. Well done! It’s a heartfelt and thoughtful piece overall! Heyday “Jump! JUMP you fool….” “I’ll break my bloody neck.” “I’ll break your fool neck if you don’t. This is where we get off…” “Okay…here goes….” “Right behind you laddie….” “Really Gramps? That really happened…you and your friend jumped right off a moving train?” “Three times, actually. Got better at it.” “And you never paid for the ride?” “That was the point. Nobody had any money. Well, the rich, they always had money. Even if they lost it, they always got more. Wealth creates wealth. But no, millions of us didn’t have any…little we had was gone in a puff of smoke…” “Not like today, huh?” “Not a lot has changed, Sonny Jim. Remember that when I’m gone. Wealth creates wealth. Poverty spreads like wildfire. Things gotta change. Be a person who makes that happen…” “That was along time ago, Jimmy. I’m glad you wrote it, but the worlds changed.” “Yeah, maybe? Gramps got lucky. The last train he jumped off landed him in a small BC. town. Met Grandmother. Went to war. Lived. Came back. Lumber mill there got a boost from the war. Three children. My mom and dad moved to the Island after Gramps passed. I’ve had a good life but exactly how I’ve ever improved the world…I dunno.” “He probably meant, be a good person. You are.” Maybe not good enough. Whole world’s veering to the right. I wanna help move it to the left.” “Then let me help you.” “Always thought you would.”~~~~~~~ Congratulations THIRTY-FOUR TIME WINNER Bill, and Honorable Mention Mark! Recipe for Romance: Cheesecake Cookies

Recipe for Romance Two champagne glasses against a purple sparkly background with bells and ribbons at their base

Welcome to Recipe for Romance! Welp, winter showed up in Cheyenne. We actually got cold temperatures and snow. This year has been so weirdly warm and dry, and we really need the moisture. That said, I don’t like being cold. So I’m sharing a great story about starting over AND comfort food. I’m sharing a snippet of IN PLAIN SIGHT, book 15 in the multi-author Summit Springs Sapphic Romance series. Triss is on the run, trying to start a new life where she can be herself. Emily has been in her position and has vowed to help those who need it. Available Now: In Plain Sight Emily nodded toward the hallway. “I live right across the hall in 7378, if you need anything. Do you have a cellphone?” Her brown eyes sharpened. Triss shook her head. “No. I had to leave it, and I didn’t want to get a random phone that he could track.” Emily nodded. “That’s fine. We’ll get you a new phone when the weather clears, that you can pay month to month with cash.” “Okay.” Triss looked back through the door to the hallway. “What’s with the numbers on the door? Seems weird for apartments to have such large numbers.” “Not when you know how I think.” Emily smirked, her eyes crinkling at the corners and pulling the skin taut against the scar that became visible along the left side of her face, from temple to jaw. “Each one is a four-digit code. Your door spells HOPE. Mine spells REST.” “And the last door, 5337?” “It’s a large storeroom, and spells KEEP. It was another way to keep people from knowing which were the apartments.” Emily rubbed the scar. “You go ahead and get settled. I stocked the cupboards with a few items like saltines, peanut butter, jam, bread, cheese, cream, small quart of milk and turkey cold cuts to get you through until you can get out to buy some real groceries. When you’re out, set up a PO box at the post office. You can actually get a street address for the box to accept packages and throw off anyone looking, including the cops. The postmaster here, Evangeline Brewster, knows all about making the cops and the Feds work for their information.” Triss raised an eyebrow. “Really?” “Oh yeah. She’s a real stickler for search warrants, and even when they have one, she’ll drag her feet and take her time to find what they’re looking for.” Gluten-Free Cheesecake Cookies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBiWz2M_AYY These delicious cookies are a really easy and tasty way to get a little cheesecake that can be shared (if you share, lol). INGREDIENTS 5 tablespoons butter, softened 1⁄3 cup brown sugar, packed 1 cup gluten free 1:1 baking flour 3⁄4 cup sugar 1(8 ounce) packet soft goat cheese, softened 1 egg 2 tablespoons goat milk1 tablespoon lime juice1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 350 F (177 C). In a small bowl, blend thoroughly butter, brown sugar and flour with a fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Scoop out 1 cup of the mixture and set aside for topping. Press remaining mixture into an 8x8x2 inch baking dish sprayed lightly with cooking spray; bake for 15 minutes. In a large bowl, combine sugar and cream cheese, mixing until smooth. Thoroughly beat in egg, milk, lime juice and vanilla. Spread over the baked crust using your spatula, and sprinkle evenly by hand the remaining brown sugar mixture. Bake for 25 minutes. Let cool, then chill for at least 1 hour (turns out better after 2 hours). Cut into 16 or more squares; serve.

Morris | Website David says: There was some strong imagery this week, but this one particularly stood out for me. The “hands fluttering like doves” was exquisite. winner announcement Week 643 Winner Kelly Heinen David says: This flash, and particularly the character of Beatrice, stuck in my mind the most when it came time to sleep on the decision. From her dialogue to the masterfully spaced descriptions of her, I felt like I was there in the room. The contrast with the narrator and his apprentice was a pleasure to read. And, of course, the last line wraps it up brilliantly Beatrice is angry. Her glare suggests I should do as she insists. Or die. It’s a death glare with instructions. My apprentice steps forward, clipboard in hand.. “I am not meant to be…down here,” Beatrice whispers. Most people say that, but here they are. My apprentice runs a finger down the list. She hands her a paper and gestures with her pen. “Please take this paper and go to the left.” Beatrice gives my apprentice a death glare. “I’m in the wrong place.” “To the left please, you’re holding up the line.” My apprentice has a backbone. Beatrice’s petite hands slam the desk. Spittle flies from her perfectly red-lipsticked lips as she makes her point known. “I said I’m. In. The. Wrong. Place.” “To the left.” “When I did my job, I was perfect. You are–” Beatrice shifts her glare as I step forward. “Were you, your first time? Perfect?” Her hands plant on her hips and she shifts her weight to one leg, the bell of her pink slacks swaying. I shove her to the side and she stumbles, her three inch heels turning her ankles in opposite directions. “How dare you!” she seethes, gripping the desk to regain her balance. “I will be rerouted to Heaven at once!” I’ve had enough. I pull Beatrice into the correct line making sure that paper won’t leave her hand until it should. If she was like this alive, her husband is probably relieved he doesn’t have to spend eternity with her. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations TWENTY-SIX TIME WINNER Kelly, and Honorable Mentions Silver, and Mark! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! Pass on the great news on Facebook, MeWe, Bluesky, Mastodon, shiny mirrors, Morse Code, and signal flags. **Cover Reveal – FOSSIL BEDS BED & BREAKFAST**

It’s time for a cover reveal of my upcoming book. This is technically a re-release because the books was published in early 2024 in an anthology. The anthology was called CRETACEOUS CRUSHES: A [GATECRASHING] CHARITY LGBTQIA ROMANCE ANTHOLOGY, and mine was the only Sapphic (F/F) romance tale in it. Helped to get us on the Amazon Lesbian list, though, so yeah. 😀 But now I have the rights back and I’ve extended the tale, so while you won’t get a whole new tale, there has been a bit added to it to make it more robust. 😉 blurb Maya Sorvino loves her life in Deadman, Wyoming. She has two great kids, a successful bed & breakfast, and enough room to freely roam as her dino self. Everything is perfect. Until a rich developer comes to town, trying to undermine her business and seize the town’s open land. Not on her watch. Persia Walker has been guarding the fossil-rich lands since she almost became one, but she won’t let a billionaire destroy sacred paleo sites for vanity. She organizes a group to take on the developer at the public meeting in hopes of preserving her territory. Then she sees Maya. Finding another dinosaur shifter in Deadman is a dream for both Maya and Persia, but the developer has something up his sleeve. What’s a better first date than going Mesozoic on a bunch of drunk vandals-for-hire? It’s a match made in Prehistory! This story was previous published in the Cretaceous Crushes LGBTQ+ Charity Anthology. It has been expanded and given a new cover. Purchase Links excerpt The warm evening air curled around Maya’s body and she tipped her head back to take a deep breath. A subtle scent tickled her nose. It smelled of sun-warmed stone, fresh water, and waterlilies. Maya dropped her chin and focused on the people around her as a pleasant and soothing vibration hit her breastbone. Someone important is here. She’d felt that kind of vibration before, when she found her kids. They’d been on the streets, but their innate kindness and strength had called to her and before she knew it, she was a mom. The same sort of vibration radiated from the people in front of the Deadman City Hall. She stood up on her tiptoes, as the humans liked to call it, looking for the source of the beguiling vibration, but there were too many people in the way. Quinn and Bailey pushed their way through the crowd toward her and she snorted. It must have been them she sensed. She grinned and opened her arms as her kids closed on her. While most people gave them amused looks, she hugged her daughter and son as if she hadn’t seen them in weeks, rather than hours. She liked the human need for contact and she employed it every chance she got. “How did it go?” She stood back to look at them. “Great!” Bailey high-fived her. “We passed out all our flyers and even found people who weren’t planning to come to the meeting. We should have a full house tonight.” “And bonus, all the folks who are coming from the university are staying at the B&B.” Quinn nodded with satisfaction. “As they should,” Maya agreed. “Damn straight. Let’s go in. I want to get a good seat to watch this tonight.” Quinn hooked her arm through Maya’s and they all went inside to find a place to sit for the meeting. Maya noted most of the people at the meeting were either business owners or conservationists, but she also noted that Thomas Stone stood with several other council members away from Mayor Blatherton, their expressions intense and focused. The soothing vibration hit Maya again and she glanced around, but Bailey settled in the chair beside her, his expression excited and expectant. She frowned a little because while it was similar to her kids’ energy, this vibration felt different, yet familiar. Not mammalian at all, but with the same feeling of rightness. Could there be someone like me here? The idea sparked both hope and trepidation in her chest. She’d been so sure she was the only one of her kind. In Wyoming at least, but possibly in the world. She’d mostly accepted it as her lot in life—she had no idea how she became who she was now, but she’d resigned herself to being alone. But the idea that there might be someone else like her, and there in Deadman as well, made excitement flutter in her chest. But who is it? She let her gaze slide around the room, looking for someone new and different. Most of the people in the room were mammalian. Although, Blatherton is completely reptilian, and not in a good way. Leave me a comment to tell me what you think. This title is a stand alone and will be out February 14 2025, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Great thanks to Kris Norris for the fantastic image. Happy reading!

Recipe for Romance: Rosemary Focaccia Bread

Recipe for Romance Two champagne glasses against a purple sparkly background with bells and ribbons at their base

Welcome to Recipe for Romance! We made it to 2025 and I’m both glad and apprehensive. I’m just kinda riding along and trying to miss the potholes. If you’re in the same SUV, how about some fantasy with a side of comfort food? Sound good? Let’s get started. I’m sharing a snippet of ANGEL INK, book 3 in the Concrete Angels MC, available now.  Haley Michaels is a fluff-piece reporter and she’s covering a Museum exhibit. Until a hot guy appears out of nowhere, smelling like rosemary and basil. Available Now: ANGEL INK Damn, I was bored with writing fluff pieces. To be honest, I wanted to run through the vaulted rooms of the museum screaming, “Let It Go” at the top of my lungs. Maybe with a cute, long-haired electric guitarist following along. It would definitely be more exciting than this story. A scuffle in one of the side rooms drew my attention and I slipped to the entrance to see what was going on. A tall guy with angelic features around his large nose and wearing a leather cut ran through the room, but paused in front of a painting with light filtering through an autumn forest. For just a moment, I swore I saw huge black wings rising up behind him. He met my gaze and darted to me before he grabbed me by the strap of my camera bag, pulling me to his chest. He planted a hot and stunning kiss on my lips. I dropped my jaw and his tongue slid along mine, electrifying me more than the long-haired guitarist in my fantasy. I tasted cinnamon rolls and hot coffee before he pulled back with a wild smile. “I saw wings.” Okay, not the best response to a sexy kiss. “Don’t worry, love. It’s an illusion.” And then he was gone. I stood there, completely non-plussed and out of words for the first time in my life, only barely registering the rest of security streaming past me. It took me several minutes to get over the kiss and the scent of the man who’d laid it on me. He’d smelled like freshly baked bread with a hint of rosemary and basil. They reminded me of safe, comfortable places where I’d always had enough. My cellphone rang, bringing my attention back to the room. The art and people around me came back into focus like hoodoos reappearing as the fog retreats from the lowlands. Hell, a lot of them look like hoodoos. Gluten-Free Rosemary Focaccia Bread https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5O_u3wfC2k For many meals, most folks want a good bread to go with it, but some breads take forever to make. Focaccia is a quick and easy bread that allows for all sorts of flavors. We’re making Rosemary Focaccia, but you could choose garlic, onion, tomato, olives, or any combo of flavors. INGREDIENTS 3 cups gluten free 1:1 baking flour 2 tsp salt 1 Tbsp sugar 1 pkg or 2 1/2 tsp instant active yeast 1 1/2 cups warm water 2 Tbsp oil in dough 1 Tbsp oil on bread 2 Tbsp dried Rosemary or 1 sprig fresh Rosemary 2 Tbsp grated hard cheese (Parmesan, Asiago, Romano, Manchego) DIRECTIONS Add flour, salt, sugar, and yeast to a large bowl, and whisk it together. Add water, and 2 Tbsp oil, mixing until the dough is pliable. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for a short time until smooth. With gluten free dough, it’s dry enough you don’t have to work it hard or with much extra flour. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 45 minutes. Because it’s gluten free, it won’t rise much. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and gently press risen dough out until it’s 1/2 inch (13 mm) thickness. Brush 1 Tbsp of oil over the top of the dough. Using a fork, make dimples in the dough all over. Sprinkle the cheese and Rosemary all across the top. Let rise for another 20 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375 F (191 C). Bake for 25 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes and serve.
