Snippet Sunday – The Door’s Open

It’s Snippet Sunday! I hope your weekend is going well. It’s quiet here in Cheyenne this weekend and that’s good. I’m showcasing ANGEL INK Book 2 in the Concrete Angels MC series. In this snippet, we’re in Haley Michaels’ POV (all in first person) and Michael has taken her back to her place to pack up so she can be safe. ~~~~~~We parked in my reserved space in front of my apartment building. Snow remained piled up against the foundation and in the places that didn’t get sun, but the walkways were clear and the steps had been salted. I headed up the stairs to the covered hallway and walked along it until I got to my door. And my instincts screamed a warning. The door stood ajar and my gut froze, which was a trick considering the snow melted outside in the sunshine. I never left my apartment door unlocked since the covered walkway between the apartments was open to anyone walking by, and I definitely hadn’t when I’d left that morning. Someone had been in my place. “What’s wrong, Haley?” Michael paused, his bulk filling the passthrough behind me. “The door’s open.” He frowned. “Did you leave your door unlocked?” I shot him a scowl. “Never.” I wanted to step in to see what all had happened, but I couldn’t make my feet move. “Let me go inside and check first.” He slid past me and I’d never be sure how he fit between me and the door jamb as big as he was. I swallowed back fear and nodded, but I didn’t want to stay outside alone. So I followed him and closed the door behind me, locking the deadbolt. I let my gaze skim the room and all my breath left my chest in a hurry. “Good glory.” The room didn’t look much different than when I’d left, but my laptop, the external hard drive that had been on the desk, and my Kindle was missing. What the hell do they need the Kindle for? I shook my head. I hope they like spicy romance with angels and demons.~~~~~~~ Hey, at least they were getting good reading material. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, Kathy Griffith Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel. Here’s the blurb for ANGEL INK: Now Available in ebook! Angels, Art, and Abduction: The magic of an angel’s heart…is written on his skin. Haley Michaels, Reporter I was minding my own business, trying to escape a party, and walked straight into a murder. Which would’ve been the scoop of a lifetime if my phone hadn’t died. And the door hadn’t locked. Now I’m stuck in a cabin in the mountains with a hot guy who appeared on the street like my knight on shining motorcycle, and I should be more worried than attracted. I mean, he’s covered in tattoos and is VP from the notorious Concrete Angels MC, the same group I’m investigating. Because I know they’re involved with the deaths of a U.S. Marshal and two FBI agents. My love life luck sucks. Michael, Concrete Angels’ VP Love isn’t something that archangels ever expect to feel. At least not the all-consuming, no-holds-barred kind of love spoken about in films and songs. But that’s what I felt the moment I laid eyes on Haley. She doesn’t know I’m not human, or just how inhuman the rest of my MC is, but I can’t stay away from her if I tried. Now I have to protect her – not only from the men hunting her, but also from the truth. The question is: will she stay when she finds out what I really am? Because if she can’t be trusted with the truth, Loki will make sure she can’t pass on the information. Permanently.

Like putting a ship in the shipyard to become a monument. Deathers don’t become monuments; they reunite with their family in the afterlife. Wrists puffy from typing, Death sits behind her desk, the opulence of the room dimmed. The gold doesn’t shine, the purples and greens accents have lost their sparkle. “How does this sound: Margaret faithfully crossed over the souls of the departed for fifty years. Now Margaret retires with her husband, and infant daughter. We thank her for her tireless efforts to give the departed a dignified send off every night. And then I’ll introduce her family members, yada, yada, yada.” “Sounds good to me. How will she cross over?” “She requested ‘just one last trip’. What does she ride?” Death asks. “A chestnut horse with silver wings. Let’s give her one last flight. Then her husband and daughter can walk her over,” I say. Her horse will retire to a beautiful pasture with other retired horses. Death nods. “Where is Margaret?” I scroll down to her name. “She will be passing in the next five minutes and her body will be found when her oldest daughter comes to bring her supper.” Death sighs. “Why can’t she keep working when she’s so happy?” We walk into the main hallway, and I shrug. “You could change that.” A grin spreads across Death’s face. “I can!” She walks away with an extra bounce in her step. I hope everyone appreciates the change. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Thirteen Time Winner Kelly, and Honorable Mentions Sheilagh and Teresa! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. Snippet Sunday – It’s Too Dangerous

It’s Snippet Sunday! Happy Father’s Day weekend and belated Juneteenth. I’m sending good thoughts to all y’all. I’m showcasing ANGEL INK Book 2 in the Concrete Angels MC series. In this snippet, we’re in Haley Michaels’ POV (all in first person) and Michael has just brought her to a coffee shop in Wyoming so she can tell him what’s going on. She’s telling him about the story she’s working on. ~~~~~~ He hissed and looked away, his expression stoic. “You need to let that one go, Haley.” “What? Are you kidding me? This is a huge story. I’m not interested in your club, only the crooked law enforcement officers who got into illegal stuff—” “No, it’s too dangerous. This is bigger than you know.” “That’s what I’m trying to understand.” I balled my hands into fists under the table and lowered my voice again. “I can’t trust the cops, which is why I anonymously reported the murder. I don’t know who’s involved with the murder of the ADA or if it’s tied to this group of dirty law enforcement. But I wasn’t going to take my chances with them finding me before I’m prepared.” Michael shot me a sharp look. “Prepared for what?” “To bring them all down and expose them.” I spread my hands. “Don’t you see? This is a career-making story that could get me onto the front page. I don’t have to mention the connection to your club. I want to make sure the crooked cops are taken down.” He shook his head, his lips tightening in to a flat line. I was pretty sure I could convince him to help me if I played my cards right. “Come on, Michael. You know I’m right.” He made a noncommittal noise and sipped his tea. “Why were the cops looking for you today?” “I don’t know. I went to work and they were there. My friend Tori suggested that my date sold me out and said it was me who reported the murder.” I shrugged as my lips turned down. “It wouldn’t surprise me. That guy’s all about himself and he wouldn’t know a real story if it landed on him.” ~~~~~~~ Yeah, I wouldn’t have stuck around either. Stories that won’t be finished and lives that stopped. The hardest decision in many people’s lives. Izzy’s finger hovered over the button. It was a simple switch, requiring little pressure. At the moment Dougie was alive, the ventilator oxygenating his blood, but in a few minutes, he could be dead. The choice was hers. “Take your time,” the nurse said. “You don’t have to do this now. Take as long as you need. It’s important you feel you’re in charge. It must be so traumatic for you, knowing how close he is.” Izzy nodded, barely perceiving her. She registered the white uniform and the name badge, but beyond that, the nurse could have been anyone. It was enough she was present, sharing the room with her. She needed someone who could give her reassurance, someone who cared. “He was a good man, you know?” Izzy looked up, lifting her finger. Her husband had been laid in the bed like a side of beef with a pulse. It had been more than a week since he’d been conscious, the last syllables he’d spoken those of her name. She wished she could have been here: she hadn’t known about the accident. It was to be only a week, just seven days. His career had meant so much to him; with him always needing to travel so he could earn enough to keep them in comfort. ‘Just one last trip,’ he’d said the week before, rolling his eyes and laughing the way he used to. She hadn’t believed it then, but now she did. He’d never fly again. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Eighteen Time Winner Mark, and Honorable Mentions Silver, Stacy, and Joel! Snippet Sunday – This Isn’t About Me

It’s Snippet Sunday! I hope your weekend is going well. It’s quiet here in Cheyenne this weekend and that’s good. I’m showcasing ANGEL INK Book 2 in the Concrete Angels MC series. In this snippet, we’re in Haley Michaels’ POV (all in first person) and Michael has just brought her to a coffee shop in Wyoming so she can tell him what’s going on, why she’s running from the cops. ~~~~~~ Michael tilted his head and narrowed his eyes. It took me a minute to realize I’d used “we” and “home” in the same sentence. Since when does it feel like I share a home with him? I mentally shook my head and sipped more of my tasty tea.  “So what happened after they left the body?” “I waited a little bit for them to go and then followed them out.” “Did you report the murder?” “My phone was dead, remember?” I shook my head and rubbed my arms, suddenly cold despite the tea. “I went back to the party to find my coat and my ride, but it had become an orgy and I’d already had a rough enough night. So I went down to the lobby and called the cops to come investigate. That’s when I left and found you on the street.” He nodded with a frown. “Why didn’t you stay around to talk to the cops?” I raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you the VP of the Concrete Angels Motorcycle Club? Would you have stayed around to talk to cops?” “This isn’t about me, Haley. Why didn’t you stay?” I grimaced when he wouldn’t be diverted. “Because I couldn’t do anything for the dead guy and I didn’t want anyone to know it was me who’d heard the murder. I might be a lowly Fort Collins Bugle reporter, but I’m high profile enough. I didn’t want them to find me and put me down, too.” ~~~~~~~ Yeah, I wouldn’t have stuck around either. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. Avila | @katheryn_avila Teresa says: Her story grabbed my attention from the first line – I wanted to know why the kiss was short-lived and why did he pull away. The tension between the mother and son is palpable, leaving me with more questions there as well. In all, this story made me want to know more about what was going on and what would happen next. Good job! The kiss is short-lived, and I don’t get a chance to respond before he pulls away. Oriza is back, and he turns to face her, moving to stand between us. “Just give us a couple of hours, and we’ll be gone.” Valmong’s voice is firm, leaving little room for argument although he’s clearly prepared to fight if he has to. His mother’s eyes move between us, lingering on me in a way that feels familiar – a battle of wills I’ve had with Valmong in the past. I can feel her assessing me, trying to come to a conclusion. She must see something she doesn’t hate, because her face softens slightly, the scowl losing its edge. “Take whatever time you need.” She finally looks away from me and back to her son. “But remember what I told you, Valmong.” She’s not your problem. Does she know I overheard them? Valmong nods, the gesture a dismissal before he turns to lead me back into the smaller room. When he closes the door, his entire body sags against it. “You don’t have to do this. I can go. The last thing I want is to cause you trouble with your family.” “Whatever issues I have with my mother, know that you have nothing to do with them. To be honest, you can’t make them any worse.” He pushes off the door and moves to the bed. “Still…” With a sigh, he lies down. “Like I said, just a few hours and we’re gone.” ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Eight Time Winner Katheryn, and Honorable Mentions Bill and David! Snippet Sunday – Mark Him For Death

It’s Snippet Sunday and I recognize there is a lot going on. So I’m here to give you just a few moments of escape from the reality that haunts us all. I’m showcasing ANGEL INK and in this snippet, we’re in Michael’s POV (all in first person) and he’s talking to Neo, the tech guy. He’s trying to figure out what’s really going on with Haley and why she was so nervous when he met her. ~~~~~~ “The woman who was here. I picked her up in front of the Turner Williams building that night. She looked spooked so I brought her here to keep her safe.” Neo snorted. “Safe. Riiiiggghht. Did you keep her safe from the monster under your bed, too?” “Kiss my arse, you tosser. I slept on one of my chairs while she took the bed.” At least the first night. “But we went to a café and she was nervous when the coppers came in. What if she witnessed the murder?” Neo frowned. “If she did, wouldn’t she have been screaming it to the rooftops? I mean, she’d have to be press to be at the party. I’m pretty sure that would be a career-making story. Why would she tip off the cops anonymously?” “I don’t know. Her phone was dead so she couldn’t get the word out or pics of it, but maybe there’s another reason.” I studied the information Neo had displayed on the monitors. “Do you think she was worried about something else, something bigger?” “Bigger? Like what?” “Like Backlog. If she announced anonymously, could it be because she didn’t know which cops to trust? According to Eric, Backlog goes high up in law enforcement.” Neo rubbed his chin as he sat back in his chair. “That could be. From what I found on O’Donnell, he was doing this ‘integrity and honesty’ thing in an effort to clean up corruption not only in the judicial branches but in law enforcement. That would definitely cramp Backlog’s style.” “And mark him for death.” I nodded as my phone buzzed. I figured it was another message from Luke and ignored it. “No way to prove it was them, of course, but if they figure out who was the anonymous caller, my woman could be in danger.” ~~~~~~~ Oops, a bit of a slip of the tongue there. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group.
