Okay folks, sit down for a real life story. This isn’t someone I know or a friend of a friend of a cousin. This is happening to my family – real people.
We have a gas stove that looks like a wood stove in the corner of our house. We learned last year that we needed to have a valve replaced that allows the gas to flow evenly, but at the time, we didn’t have the money.
It’s now time to do the maintenance on the units in our house. The place who does the work called to set up an appointment and to verify the price of the valve. Last year and two weeks ago, it was $249 for the valve, steep but doable. Plus the installation ($140) and the maintenance on two units ($300) we we’re looking at a total cost of round $700.
Today, the cost for the valve alone is $449 – because of Trump’s republican tariffs. Yes, he owns them, and he’s requiring them to hurt the American people. That’s a $200 increase on just the valve needed to make the stove work to keep my home warm.
With everything that needs to be done, it will now cost us $900 before taxes. We can’t afford that. Hell, we weren’t sure we could afford the $700 price tag. So we’re foregoing the maintenance and just paying for the installation of the valve on one unit – and still paying $600.
