Monday Motivation – Persistence

Good morning! How’s your new year going so far? Okay, okay, don’t laugh. It’s going to be fine, eventually, and we’ll all get into the swing of things here soon. Like getting this post up on time and writing. So, you ready? Good! Have you ever started a project, either exercising, or eating right, or a research project or even a novel, and just felt that no matter what you do, nothing is happening? No progress is being made? This is the way with most projects. They take a lot of work to get moving, often because you’re on a learning curve and trying something new. It’s like pushing a boulder. It takes a lot of effort to get it moving but once it is, the going gets easier. It’s the same with any project or endeavor. It takes a lot of start-up effort. Take working out to release weight and get your body healthier. At first, you don’t see much change except you’re more tired and there are muscle aches. Your clothes are still tight and the scale is givin’ you the stink-eye. But, gradually, it gets easier to get on the treadmill or the elliptical or the rower or the stationary bike, pick up those free weights, do those leg lifts and squats and crunches and lunges, and over time your body changes. It becomes stronger and the efforts become easier. Your clothes either loosen up or fit better and you can see the changes in the mirror. Once when I was whining about not releasing weight, a friend reminded me that the fat has to come off the internal organs before it comes off the surface. I had to burn that fat first before I could see the changes on the outside. Which totally sucks and helps sabotage our efforts when we see nothing. Here’s the thing. The ocean beats on the shorelines, many made up of hard rock geology, and slowly, the rock is worn away. It’s not fast. It’s not large bits at a time. Change is incremental. But the ocean never gives up and is persistent, and eventually the ground gives way. Whatever you’re struggling with right now – no matter what changes don’t seem to be happening – keep at it. Don’t give up even if you don’t “see” the changes, they are happening. Your focus, drive, and determination really do matter and do make a difference. Focus on your goal and don’t listen to the naysayers, even your own “eyes”, and keep going. You’re stronger than your doubts, you’re stronger than your fears, and you will achieve your goals. You got this. Be the ocean. What tricks have you learned that work for you to keep your determination alive?

Monday Motivation: Laughter

Great Horned Owl taking flight from Prickly Pear cactus pads. Text: Monday Motivation: Jumpstart your week! https://siobhanmuir.com

Good morning! Got your coffee or tea? Good, just remember to maybe wait to drink them AFTER you read this post. Why? Because today’s motivation is laughter and I have a few images that hopefully will make you spit water. Of course, to save your keyboard (and your monitory), just wait until you’re done reading to drink, okay? The holidays are here and they’re different than usual for a lot of people. We need humor more than ever and I have few things posted below that will hopefully lighten your load and brighten your smiles. So with no further ado, I give you the Doors. Too much of a groaner? Okay, let’s see what else we can come up with. How about we stick with a little of the Lord of the Rings theme? Oh, come on, that was funny! BTW I love both those actors, Andy Serkis, who I saw as the bad guy in INKHEART, and Martin Freeman, who I first saw in LOVE ACTUALLY. Two more movies that were fun to watch. Okay, lets try something else. I’m determined to make y’all laugh. Who here is planning on going on a diet for 2021? Try this: I literally spit out my coffee the first time I read that one. And I did have to clean my desk. Like I said, keep the drinking until after the post. And if you’re done with dieting, go ahead and throw away those old protein bars. No one will want– I stand corrected. The next one is a little NSFW in the sense that anyone reading over your shoulder might question the need for expletives but let me tell you, this one had me spitting my coffee again, especially since Mr. SM and I are big Transformers fans. All right, y’all. I hope you laughed and I hope your holidays are full of laughter and joy despite being so different this year. Find the laughter, even if it’s rueful, and give yourself permission to relax. It’ll work wonders on your whole being. Happy holidays and many blessings!

Monday Motivation – After a Holiday Weekend

Great Horned Owl taking flight from Prickly Pear cactus pads. Text: Monday Motivation: Jumpstart your week! https://siobhanmuir.com

Good morning! Got your coffee or tea? I totally understand if you need it today. The first day back to the usual routine after a long holiday weekend is always rough at best. But it’s the last day of #NaNoWriMo and I know you got this. But here’s the best part. Tomorrow is December, and that’s when the lights and decorations come out. That’s when the trees go up and the holiday cards go out. That’s when magic happens, both in life and in writing. Yes, I’m choosing to find the good parts, but sometimes that’s all it comes down to – a choice to see the good parts. Glory knows, this year has been a trial from one end to the other. I grew up with the Transformers cartoons and Swoop was my favorite Dinobot, but “tell Swoop good part” was my favorite line from the movie. But Swoop wasn’t wrong. Focusing on the “good parts” actually brings about more “good parts” and reminds you of your own experienced good parts. The best thing to do is take some time to think about all the things you learned about yourself during this year. How has your writing changed? How have your routines changed? What strengths did you discover? What new skills did you develop? What have you learned about yourself that you want to cultivated and nurture? Tell Siobhan the good parts! And remember: you’ve survived this year and have found new ways to move forward despite the many hardships. That’s the best part. So what are your “good parts”?

Monday Motivation: #NaNoWriMo Ahhhhhhh!

#NaNoWriMo has started! *flailing hands and panicked running* Ahem! Okay, back to the regular programming – which I have no idea what that is but it sounds good. How are y’all doing? Are you doing National Novel Writing Month? This is Day Two and hopefully you have your tales started and your word count hummin’ along. Since I’m doing NaNoWriMo for the first time officially (I’ve done it for years unofficially) I’m nervous I can’t keep the pace up. But I’ve set goals for myself and once I reach them I don’t have to do more. For the Virgo in me, that’s huge. That’s the key to success in NaNoWriMo – setting “achievable” goals. What I mean by that is, set goals that you believe you can hit each day. It doesn’t matter what you actually can or can’t hit. None of that matters if you don’t believe it. Hopefully, you’ve already made those decisions before November started, but if not, today is a great day to set down your daily or weekly goals. Just remember, you only need 1667 words each day to reach 50,000 for the month. So what keeps you motivated to write each day in November? Good luck and happy writing!

Wednesday Randomness: Halloween

Good morning! This weekend is Halloween and it’s also the time of Samhain (pronounced Sav-en in Scotland), All Saints Day, and Dia de Los Muertos. I’ve been doing some research on the proper ways to celebrate these holidays for an upcoming book, but I was struck at how much in common these holidays had. For example: During Samhain, the practitioners make altars to honor deceased ancestors and loved ones and they leave special bread and offerings to the spirits outside. This is similar to Dia de Los Muertos where they bake bread and goodies and sugary treats to leave at the graves of their loved ones, and they decorate altars to deceased family with marigolds and brightly colored paper stencils. A white 7-day candle is lit in a western-facing window to guide the dead home to their rest three days before and three days after. I really liked that one. What a lovely way to help those who’ve gone before us. Dressing up in costumes is something done for the children while Samhain proper is more of a spiritual celebration, a time of self-reflection and introspection. It’s a good time to think of how you’ve grown, the accomplishments and challenges you’ve faced this year, and things you’ve learned. This year, we won’t be trick-or-treating as the pandemic’s numbers continue to go up in our state and it looks like it’s going to be relatively cold outside this year. But we’ll be dressing up in costumes because that has been fun for years. How do you celebrate the turning of the year at harvest time?

Monday Motivation: Prepping for NaNoWriMo

Great Horned Owl taking flight from Prickly Pear cactus pads. Text: Monday Motivation: Jumpstart your week! https://siobhanmuir.com

Happy Monday! I know, not your favorite phrase by any stretch of the imagination. But, that’s what I’m here for, right? This weekend I took the plunge and decided to sign up for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) officially. I do it almost every year, but this time I thought I would try to actually earn the badges instead of just cheering my friends on from the sidelines. This will be my first official year and I’ve “won” twice before, the last time in 2019 writing 72K words in November. But because it was unofficial, I didn’t get to win any of the badges and I thought I’d make the effort this year. It’s part of my new understanding of myself. I found out this year that when I’m really focused, I can write 1500 words an hour. That might not seem like a lot, but it blew my mind that I could write 3K a day in 2 hours of work. Imagine what I could do if I wrote for just 4 hours of work. So this year I will be putting that to the test. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo? And if you have, how many times have you “won”, writing 50K words? If you’d like to join NaNo this year, click HERE. And you can find me HERE. Happy Writing!

Anniversary – Special Day All the Way Around

Today is my 16th Anniversary with Mr. SM and we’re celebrating with taking walks in the crisp autumn air and watching movies while drinking hot apple cider. We always check to see what the traditional, modern, and alternative anniversary gifts and try to tailor our shared gifts to fit one of the suggestions. This year we decided to go with gemstone rings because the stone for 16 years is Peridot and we love being ridiculously cute (have been for 16 years 😉 ) One is a spinner ring, basically a meditation ring with the peridot as the item that helps you repeat your mantras – which fits me very well. The other is a tungsten and red opal and peridot ring that is more Mr. SM’s style since his birthday is in October. It was such a fun way to celebrate our 16 years. The other anniversary we’re celebrating today is a year ago we sent the earnest money for our house. It was an exciting day because we’d been waiting 5 years to find a place that suited us. We hadn’t expected to find a house on this side of town, but it was the perfect house and it turned out to be the perfect neighborhood for us. We count the bunnies we see on our walks everyday. Record so far was 30 bunnies spotted. So two anniversaries today and lots of laughs over the last 16 years. We’re still laughing today. We hope your day is beautiful and full of good things.

Leaving Facebook: Breaking the Social Media Monopoly

As you might be aware, I’m thinking of leaving Facebook for a variety of reasons, striking off into a better place to interact with readers but also find peace. I’m not heading off into the bush like a hermit, but I’m just not willing to play by the rules Facebook is enacting. I recognize it’s easy to be there and we’re used to it. Facebook has trained us to think we ‘need’ it to connect. But it’s also tightening a noose around social media and making us follow rules that benefit a company and in particular, white entitled males (don’t get me started on the double standard that women users face everyday – it’s too long a story). It’s the frog in the pot analogy. At first, the frog doesn’t notice anything’s wrong. Then you turn up the heat just a little. The frog gets used to it and doesn’t hop out. So you turn up the heat a little more. You keep doing this until the frog slowly boils to death because it was a slow burn (see what I did there? 😀 ) Facebook’s upcoming Terms of Service (TOS) has some alarming changes for me. Some folks will surely tell me, “Eh it’s not that bad and the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.” Right, for them, they’re still the frog – it’s not that bad. But for me, I’m ready to hop out of the pot. A sister author and friend asked me where I’d be if not on Facebook, and that got me thinking. We have a lot of social media sites, but Facebook has us stuck with them as long as we play by their rules. It’s time to break the monopoly on our time. So where else can you find me? Patreon is a great way to keep up with me and get some great exclusives, including the live streaming cooking videos. There are four tiers to fit any budget and I’d love to share with you. MeWe for Facebook-esque posts and images, and the #flashfiction groups. Yes, #ThursThreads has a group there where you can get the announcements about the weekly challenge. YouTube – I have a channel, but I can only do live cooking videos there if I have 1000 followers or more, so please follow me there. Let’s make this a regular thing! Instagram – I’m not a pro, but you still get images from me, usually of wildlife, my writing partner (Hobbes), and my yard. And now I can do live posts there too. Edenbooks.com has a place for purchases like ARe and social media side like MeWe and Facebook. I only have 18 friends there at the moment, but I post just like on Facebook. Sign up for my newsletter. It’s weekly so you can find out the latest pretty quick, but I don’t spam you and I only send to those who want to be there. The new rules coming as of Oct 1 for Facebook – I got another warning today – make it harder for me to be on Facebook – so I’m not willing to stay. So leave a comment here to let me know you saw it and where you’ll look for me. Heck you can even just come here each day. 🙂
