Recipe for Romance: Hungarian Potato Salad

Recipe for Romance Two champagne glasses against a purple sparkly background with bells and ribbons at their base

Welcome to Recipe for Romance! It’s the end of summer and the temperatures are slowly dropping. Time for the harvest to start and all those farmer’s markets to bring out the best things like squash and potatoes. I LOVE potatoes! So let’s get cookin’. I’m sharing a snippet of TAKE THE REINS, book 1 in the Rifts series. Bethany is just going for a walk to figure out how to get out of an arranged marriage she didn’t agree to. The problem is, she’s not in the US anymore. She’s definitely gonna need some comfort food after this. Available Now: Take The Reins Squinting against the dust, she searched for a place to hide. Where had all the horses come from? Had her father actually sent the cavalry after her? To hell with that. Bethany crawled toward the maple where she’d left Killian, hoping the dirt and dust would obscure her identity. If she could get to her horse, she’d blend in with the others and no one would notice her riding away. Protecting her eyes from flying debris, she scanned the sky looking for the spreading branches of the maple above the cloudy air. She scrambled the last few feet, searching for the only horse legs not moving. She’d almost reached the edge of the site when a pair of striped hooves stopped in front of her. Bethany froze and looked up, way, way up, into the scowling face of a fierce man. Wait, how’d she miss the horse’s head? The butt of a spear hit the ground before her hands and she jerked back, falling to her ass again. So much for being a lady. Her mother would’ve been appalled. The dust cleared a little more and she got a good look at the man mounted before her. Except he wasn’t mounted. The horse’s shoulders and chest sprouted from where his human legs should be, and the spot where his man parts should hang… “Oh lordy, I don’t think I’m in Kentucky anymore.” The centaur’s scowl only deepened. He bent at what would be a human waist, leaning on his spear and stuck his nose no more than six inches from hers. “What are you?” Bethany gaped at the bearded face before her. She hadn’t expected his voice to be so musical or smooth when coupled with such a harsh visage. “I…” “What are you? Druid? Gorgon?” Bethany drew back. “Wait, what? No, I’m human.” Deep brown eyes scanned her face, the scowl never leaving his features. “Humans are a myth.” Hungarian Potato Salad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5UGVLrPKCE&t=3s Potato Salad is a very common side dish at a lot of celebrations and events. Most of the time, it’s brought to barbecues with burgers and hotdogs. But this version is the best I’ve ever eaten and is incredibly simple. INGREDIENTS2-5 lbs of potatoes (we like to use red)1 medium onion Salt1-2 cups Mayonnaise DIRECTIONSPut the potatoes in a stockpot, whole, and cover with water with about two inches of water above them. Add a little salt and set the pot to boil. Cover and boil for about 45 minutes or until the potatoes easily slip off the tines of a fork when stabbed. Peel your onion and cut it into thin discs, no more than a quarter of an inch wide. Cut the discs in half and throw into a bowl. Add at least 1Tbsp of salt to the onions and mix it in with your hands until completely coated. Set aside to dehydrate. Set out two bowls, one large, one medium, and a pot of ice water for blanching. When the potatoes are done boiling, drain off the water. These potatoes will be VERY HOT, so take one at a time and drop into the ice water for a few seconds, then peel over the medium bowl with a blade of a knife. Once the potato is peeled, slice in discs into the large bowl. Continue with all potatoes. Squeeze the liquid out of the onions and add them to the bowl. Add the mayonnaise and stir gently until completely coated. Serve immediately.

Snippet Sunday – Bullet Holes

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and we had a good 10 days of Cheyenne Frontier Days. I got the chance to ride in a wagon for one of the parades. 😉 The Triple Star Ranch series now has three books, ROPE A FALLING STAR, STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT and STAR SPANGLED BANNER. There’s a fourth one coming, but with so many writing projects going you can expect it probably in 2022. Tentative title: Loving a Tin Star. In this snippet, Petty Officer Enrique Sanchez is talking to his CO Kent “Bruiser” Anderson about what went wrong and why he’s in the hospital. They’re Leap Frog SEALs who jump out of the C-130s for the event. ~~~~~~ “Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Kent shook his head. “How are you doin’ for real? The docs treating you okay?” “Yeah.” Enrique scowled. “They say I have to lay low for a few days and rest, but I need to get back to it.” Kent nodded. “Yeah, I feel you. But for once, I gotta agree with them. You impacted hard and punctured a lung. Ain’t nothing you can do but heal. What the hell happened out there?” Enrique shook his head and resettled himself in the bed. “I dunno. One minute the drop was going fine, and the next, the chute folded and I hit the dirt. Did you look at the chute?” “Not yet, but it’s on the docket this afternoon and the rest of our jumps are canceled.” Kent frowned. “Did you hear anything, like shots or ripping to tell you it was collapsing?” “Nope. Not a damn thing. Between the wind and the crowd, I didn’t hear anything.” He tilted his head. “Why?” “Because the CFD med lady said the doc at the arena, who looked like a fuckin’ cowgirl, said to check the chute for bullet holes.” Enrique scowled. “Bullet holes? Was someone shooting at me?” “I’ll have more intel this afternoon. But we’ll be checking security cameras to see if we can get a fix on anything like a shooter.” Kent rubbed the back of his neck. “Still can’t believe she was a doc when she looked like a damn buckle bunny.” Enrique snorted. “You don’t really look like a SEAL in civvies, either, Bruiser. More like a badass biker thug ready to throw down. No one would expect you at High Tea with lace doilies.” Kent grunted. “Yeah, well, I wasn’t gonna let just anyone take a look at you. But she didn’t back down.” ~~~~~~~ Do I hear some grudging respect? 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel. Here’s the blurb for STAR SPANGLED BANNER: Now available! Sometimes a falling star wears a flag… Dr. Suzie Appleton expected a helluva ride in the barrel-racing championships at Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo, but she had no idea she’d have to save a man falling from the sky. When he calls her for a date, she’s hesitant, but there’s something sexy and seductive about the Leap Frog, and she takes a chance. She suggests he come to the Triple Star Ranch for his therapy to have more time with him before he returns to jumping out of airplanes. Petty Officer Enrique Sanchez signed up to serve his country and expected to get shot at, just not during an exhibition jump at a rodeo. But the sexy doctor who saved his life in the arena is willing to sign off on his transfer on one condition: that he’s not her patient. Works for Enrique. He’d much rather play doctor with her than have her white coat get in the way of their personal relationship. While the attraction between them isn’t one-sided, neither are the threats. Someone is trying to complete their attempt on Enrique’s life, and someone else has their sights set on Suzie. Rumors and lies threaten to destroy their relationship. But all’s fair in love and war, and both of them could lose big.

Snippet Sunday – SEALs Take Care of Their Own

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and this is the final day of Cheyenne Frontier Days. It was mellower this year than in the past, but I did go to one of the parades and got to visit the park. The Triple Star Ranch series now has three books, ROPE A FALLING STAR, STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT and STAR SPANGLED BANNER. There’s a fourth one coming, but with so many writing projects going you can expect it probably in 2022. Tentative title: Loving a Tin Star. In this snippet, Dr. Suzie is trying to ascertain the extent of the downed SEAL’s injuries. ~~~~~~ “Sir, my name is Dr. Suzie Appleton, can you hear me?” The man moaned but didn’t open his eyes. Sweet glory, let’s hope he didn’t break his neck. “I’m going to check you over for injuries, sir.” She thanked all the watching deities he’d uncurled onto his back, but she worried he might have broken something internally. One arm lay curled protectively around the bundled American flag. Always ready to protect the flag. The other lay across his body at an odd angle and she suspected he’d used that arm to slow him down when he landed. His ragged breathing made her listen closely. His wheezing suggested a compression she couldn’t see. She checked his pulse just as the other members of his Leap Frogs team gathered around him. “Miss, you need to get away from him.” A gruff man reached for her, but she shook her head and dipped out of the way. “That’s Doctor to you, Sailor, and I’m checking him for injuries. He’s broken his right arm and I suspect he’s broken a rib or two, given the sounds his breath is making. He needs to get to a hospital ASAP to check for internal hemorrhaging and injuries.” “The SEALs take care of their own, doctor.” The gruff man growled and tried to grab her again. “Then have your corpsman get his ass here fast, sailor, so you can save your teammate. You’re gonna need to stabilize his chest if you want him to live.” She didn’t know for sure if that was the case, given she couldn’t see inside his body armor, but she wouldn’t give an inch when her expertise was questioned. No one knew they were SEALs when they wore street clothes. The same pertained to her when she competed in the barrel-racing events. She couldn’t exactly wear a white lab coat. ~~~~~~~ Do NOT question this woman’s expertise. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. Snippet Sunday – Yippy-Kai-Yay

It’s Snippet Sunday and I finally have a new book coming in the Concrete Angels MC series. It’s already March. Where the heck is the year going? Who said it could go this fast? Did someone speed it up? I’m showcasing ANGEL INK and it’s coming soon! In this snippet, we’re in Haley Michaels’ POV (all in first person) and she’s made it back to the party where she started before she witnessed a murder. This is unedited at the moment so forgive typos if you find them. ~~~~~~ Holy shit, I’d gone away for about an hour, and the party turned into a drunken holiday orgy while the ADA got murdered upstairs. Might as well have been the Nakatomi Plaza. Yippy-kai-yay, mudfucker. I spotted my “date” sharing a ménage with the man and women he’d been hanging around earlier and headed for the coat room. Was sex at a holiday party considered prostitution? I didn’t really want to know. I had to find a phone. I threw my coat over my shoulders and shoved my arms through the sleeves just as someone stumbled into me. Two someones. I lost my balance and fell into the mass of coats on the hangers, dropping to the floor. A high-pitched giggle was followed by the sound of a belt buckle coming undone and a drunken male grunt. “Oh, yeah, baby. Whip out that man-meat.” They’re not gonna—Never mind. Another male grunt combined with a matching female grunt and the sound of bodies hitting the wall, rhythmically, filled the coatroom space. The scent of arousal mixed with alcohol perfumed the air and I rubbed my face with my hands. I so don’t need this. Gritting my teeth, I stood up and pushed my way through the coats. “Excuse me.” The woman squawked, which was pretty impressive since the guy had her damn near folded in half against the wall as he jack-hammered into her. He didn’t even pause as I shoved past and I left them to their conjugal relations as I returned to the elevators. I needed to get out of here and find a phone. And a ride. How the hell was I gonna get home? ~~~~~~~ Nothing like getting the peepshow without asking. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. Here’s the blurb for ANGEL INK: Coming Soon Angels, Art, and Avarice: The magic of an angel’s heart…is written on his skin. Haley Michaels, Reporter I was minding my own business, trying to escape a party, and walked straight into a murder. Which would’ve been the scoop of a lifetime if my phone hadn’t died. And the door hadn’t locked. Now I’m stuck in a cabin in the mountains with a hot guy who appeared on the street like my knight on shining motorcycle, and I should be more worried than attracted. I mean, he’s covered in tattoos and is VP from the notorious Concrete Angels MC, the same group I’m investigating. Because I know they’re involved with the deaths of a U.S. Marshal and two FBI agents. My love life luck sucks. Michael, Concrete Angels’ VP Love isn’t something that archangels ever expect to feel. At least not the all-consuming, no-holds-barred kind of love spoken about in films and songs. But that’s what I felt the moment I laid eyes on Haley. She doesn’t know I’m not human, or just how inhuman the rest of my MC is, but I can’t stay away from her if I tried. Now I have to protect her – not only from the men hunting her, but also from the truth. The question is: will she stay when she finds out what I really am? Because if she can’t be trusted with the truth, Loki will make sure she can’t pass on the information. Permanently.

Snippet Sunday – Kiddie Pool

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and I’m on a deadline. Yay me. The Triple Star Ranch series now has three books, ROPE A FALLING STAR and STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT ,and STAR SPANGLED BANNER. In this snippet, Dr. Suzie is heading home for the night. ~~~~~~ A few moments later, Enrique emerged from the Bunkhouse dressed in jeans, t-shirt, and running shoes, and she had to swallow to keep from drooling at his physique despite the sling around his arm. He might have been on the injured list, but it didn’t slow him down. “Where are you headed tonight, Doc?” He stopped beside her with a smile. “I’m going home to my kiddie pool and a glass of wine.” He raised an eyebrow. “Kiddie pool? Doesn’t the Triple Star have a spa for that sort of thing?” She laughed. “I don’t want hot water, I want to cool my feet off after being on them all day.” “Ah, okay. Want some company?” She tilted her head. “Are you offering to join me in my kiddie pool, Petty Officer?” “Yes, ma’am.” He grinned as he fell in beside her. “It’s part of the reason I changed therapy venues. Well, maybe not the kiddie pool, but to spend more time with you.” She shook her head in mock disappointment. “Oh, I’m sad you hadn’t included the kiddie pool.” “Ma’am, I’m a SEAL. I can recalibrate on the fly to fit the parameters of the mission.” Suzie laughed. “That is an admirable quality.” “Thank you, ma’am. I’m known for achieving my objectives.” She nodded as they continued toward her bungalow. “And what is your objective tonight?” He met her gaze as a smile curled his lips. “To have dinner and relax with you.” She raised an eyebrow. “Nothing else?” “No, ma’am.” She shoved the disappointment back behind her eyes. She’d been hoping he wanted something a little more intimate. “At least not at this moment. Like I said, I’ll recalibrate as the mission evolves.” He grinned and she laughed. ~~~~~~~ Nothing like a man who can shift on the fly. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. Snippet Sunday – Bullfighter

Today’s a big day for the Muir household. We’re moving the horse! Keep an eye on my social media to find out what that means. The Triple Star Ranch series now has three book, ROPE A FALLING STAR, STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT, and STAR SPANGLED BANNER. You not only see the old favorite characters but meet some new ones. In this snippet, Tom Colton is trying to reassure Petty Officer Sanchez that he won’t lose all his endurance and strength while healing. ~~~~~~ “Hey, don’t worry about it, Sanchez.” Tom gave him an easy smile. “I’ll work you hard enough without pushing your injuries, and you’ll be fit as a fiddle soon enough.” He grinned and it coaxed a smile out of Enrique. “You ever had a punctured lung and a broken arm at the same time?” Tom snorted. “Hell yeah. Well, not the lung, but I did have broken ribs, collarbone and arm at the same time. Made breathing a bitch, and ridin’ even worse.” “Riding?” Enrique raised his eyebrows. “Bronc ridin’, yeah.” “Shhhhhiiitt. You rode broncos?” “Hell yeah. Won the championship three times before quittin’.” Tom chuckled at Enrique’s impressed look as he led him out the back door to the yard behind the lodge. “Ah hell, it ain’t nearly as tough as what y’all have to do as a SEAL, and no one was givin’ me hazard pay. Let’s get you settled in your place before I show you what all you’ll be doin’.” Enrique followed Tom outside where a paved path led around a large duck pond edged with cattail reeds. The barn and covered arena sat off to the left and another building stood ahead of them. It resembled a two story western motel sporting covered balconies with wrought iron railings. A few people sat on benches around the pond, relaxing, while others followed an instructor in a yoga class. “Wow, this place is nice.” “Thanks.” Tom beamed. “We’ve worked pretty hard to make this one of the best places to come for therapy in Wyoming. My dad recognized the need for it after his time in the Army and as a bull fighter.” “Bull fighter?” Enrique raised his eyebrows. “He challenged bulls?” “Oh, no, not the way you’re thinkin’. Folks used to call them ‘rodeo clowns.’” ~~~~~~~ The hardest jobs aren’t always jumping out of airplanes. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. Snippet Sunday – Guess Lyttle Was Right

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and it’s the New Year! Woohoo! Okay, I’m also in a new house and I’m ready for a new writing year, so bring on the new. The Triple Star Ranch series now has three books, ROPE A FALLING STAR, STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT , and STAR SPANGLED BANNER now out! Yay! You not only see the old favorite characters but meet some new ones. In this snippet, Enrique is seeing Suzie for the first time in her work environment and it doesn’t go quite the way he thought it would. ~~~~~~ Suzie frowned as she scanned the orders from Dr. Lyttle. “Shoveling, tossing hay, and lunging horses are out. Those jobs will pull too much on his arms and torso.” She shot Enrique an apologetic smile. “But grooming, with the exception of using a hoof pick, grain distribution, and helping Doc Bright hold the animals would be fine.” “Damn, Doc, that’s a lot of standing around. Can I at least go running?” She shook her head. “Not for another week or so. I know you Navy SpecOps types. You don’t just jog, you push your bodies until they break, which isn’t conducive to healing a punctured lung. Given how healthy you were before the fall, I suspect your body will heal faster than most ordinary folks, but you have to give it a chance.” Enrique couldn’t help the scowl pulling at his lips. “I know it’s not what you wanted to hear, but I won’t undo all the healing your body has already done. You didn’t think I’d just let you run around here, did you?” “Leave anything for me to do that’s real heavy.” Tom clapped a hand on Enrique’s shoulder. “Trust me, draggin’ around a grain wagon one-handed will get you winded, especially after restin’ for a few weeks. I won’t let you get soft, Sanchez.” Enrique tightened his jaw and nodded sharply, hating his injured status all over again. Guess Lyttle was right and Suzie’s a hardass at work. Snippet Sunday – Doubly Glad

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and it’s snowing in Cheyenne. Just an inch but I have to go out for ingredients and I’m reluctant. Not that I can’t drive, it’s dealing with others who think they’re all that in the snow. Oi. The Triple Star Ranch series already has two books, ROPE A FALLING STAR and STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT in it. And STAR SPANGLED BANNER is now out! Yay! You not only see the old favorite characters but meet some new ones. In this snippet, Petty Officer Sanchez has arrived at the Triple Star Ranch and gets to meet Tom Colton. ~~~~~~ By the time the paperwork was done and Enrique got his key, a tall man strode into the lobby area with a rolling gait. He looked like the stereotypical cowboy with a chambray shirt, faded jeans, low-heeled boots, and a weathered straw hat. His eyes looked like they’d seen a lot, but his smile brightened his whole face as his gaze lit on Enrique. “Petty Officer Sanchez, right?” The cowboy held out his hand. “Tom Colton. Welcome to the Triple Star Therapy Ranch.” “Thank you, sir.” “Aw, you don’t have to call me sir. Tom’ll do.” He shook firmly but without the tightness of a man establishing dominance. “I understand you’re here for some physical therapy to get you back into peak condition. That right?” “Yes, sir. Er, sorry. Old habit in the military.” Enrique grimaced. “’Sokay. Let’s go talk to Doctor Appleton. I understand she was the first one on the scene of your accident.” Tom turned and gestured toward a hallway into the lodge. “That’s right.” Enrique’s heart revved up but he kept his expression mild. “Dr. Appleton was in the arena when I landed. I don’t remember much, but she was there and got me stabilized before I was taken to the VA.” Tom whistled. “You’re damn lucky she was there. Best rural doc around. Hell, in some ways she’s better than the docs they have at the Cheyenne Medical Center.” “Then I’m doubly glad she was there that day.” “Hell yeah.” He paused by the door to a small clinic. “I don’t think she has any patients yet this morning so she should be able to explain your doctor’s orders and we can set up a recovery regimen that’ll benefit everyone.” ~~~~~~~ Tom definitely knows how lucky he is and Enrique is learning. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. Snippet Sunday – Ethical Reasons

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and it’s cold Cheyenne. We had over a foot of snow for Thanksgiving and more was added last night. I’m glad I’m inside staying warm. The Triple Star Ranch series already has two books, ROPE A FALLING STAR and STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT in it. And STAR SPANGLED BANNER is now out! Yay! You not only see the old favorite characters but meet some new ones. In this snippet, Dr. Suzie is talking on the phone to her best friend Seychelles about the date she had with Petty Officer Sanchez. Suzie is the first to speak. ~~~~~~ “I’m definitely going to see him again. He’ll be coming here to the Triple Star Ranch for rehabilitation therapy.” “How the hell did you swing that?” Seychelles sounded impressed. “Wait, he’s not gonna be your patient, is he? ‘Cause that would suck for ethical reasons.” “No, he’s not my patient. He’ll be either Tom or Trip’s patient and I just oversee the medical issues if they arise.” Suzie couldn’t keep the giddy grin off her face. “You know I don’t date patients.” “Just checkin’. I didn’t want you to sabotage yourself out of this opportunity.” “What do you mean by that? When have I sabotaged a relationship?” “Seriously? What about Deacon Malloy back during your residency?” Suzie rolled her eyes. “It was during my residency. I didn’t have time to wipe my ass, much less take on a relationship with a needy bar owner. Besides, he had body odor from the Bog of Eternal Stench. That wasn’t going to work with my nose.” “Okay. Well, what about Isaac Easton?” “The trucker? That should say enough right there.” “Hey, I know a lot of truckers who are great guys, plus worldly and funny.” “There’s nothing wrong with truckers, per se. But Easton had a foot fetish and he was never here. I need someone who’s gonna be around a lot more.” “Oh, like you’re the epitome of ‘never busy.’” Seychelles’s sarcasm oozed through the phone. “And you’re not getting out of telling me how it went with the sailor boy. Who could be deployed at any time and not around, either.” “First off, he’s not a boy by any stretch of the imagination.” No, he wasn’t. He was hot, masculine, sexy, and adult.

Snippet Sunday – Always a Man Short

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and it snowed in Cheyenne. Brrr! I think we bypassed Fall and went straight to winter. But the snow is pretty. The Triple Star Ranch series already has two books, ROPE A FALLING STAR and STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT in it. And STAR SPANGLED BANNER coming out soon. I have to finish the edits and it’s all done. But that doesn’t mean I can’t tease you. In this snippet, Petty Officer Enrique Sanchez has returned from his date with Suzie to talk to his team about the reason he’s injured. ~~~~~~ Bruiser snorted. “Just get the paperwork signed and heal up completely because I’m not gonna go easy on you when you’re back to one hundred percent.” “Yes, sir.” Enrique nodded. “Thanks for this, Chief.” He waved the papers. “Yeah, you’re welcome. Just get better. I don’t like being a man short.” Petty Officer Second Class Avery Hightower barked a laugh as he joined them, looking down on their CO from his height of 6’5”. “Sir, you’re always a man short. Or maybe just a short man.” “Shut up, Hightower. You find anything out or you still got your head in the clouds?” Bruiser scowled, but amusement sparkled in his gray eyes. Hightower lost his grin and he nodded. “Let’s take Sanchez back to his room so he can gather up his shit and I’ll tell you what I know.” Enrique’s gut clenched with unease as they all trooped down the halls to his assigned room. Hightower was the chute specialist, though each man in the Leap Frog team inspected his own equipment. But Enrique’s chute failure was unusual and they weren’t taking any chances. They filed into his room and Bruiser shut the door, leaning against it. “What did you find?” Hightower scowled and with his dark skin, he looked sinister. “The doc was right. Someone shot the chute. I found two bullet holes in the upper canopy. We’re just lucky Sanchez was close enough to the ground and had some mad skills to keep from dyin’. Someone definitely aimed for him.” “Are you shitting me? ’Cause I’m not finding this funny.” Enrique widened his eyes. “Not bullshittin’ you, bro.” Hightower shook his head. “Someone smuggled a weapon into the arena and shot at us.” ~~~~~~~ So there’s a lot more going on than a random accident. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group.
