#ThursThreads – Tying Tales Together – Week 730

Welcome back to the home of #ThursThreads for Week 729. Year foundation 14! The first year of the new cycle, the Mountain Year. To those who keep coming back, I’m delighted to see you again!

Today is Thursday and that means it’s time to start flashing on #ThursThreads, the challenge that ties tales together. Want to keep up each week? Check out the #ThursThreads #flashfiction group on Discord.

Need the rules? Read on.

Here’s how it works:

  • The prompt is a line from the previous week’s winning tale.
  • The prompt can appear ANYWHERE in your story and is included in your word count.
  • The prompt must be used as is. It can be split, but no intervening words can be inserted or tenses changed.

Rules to the Game:

  • This is a Flash Fiction challenge, which means your story must be a minimum of 100 words, maximum of 250.
  • The story must be new writing, not a snippet from something published elsewhere with the prompt added.
  • Incorporate the prompt anywhere into your story (included in your word count).
  • Post your story in the comments section of this post
  • Include your word count in the post (or be excluded from judging)
  • Include your social media handle or email in the post (so we easily notify you)
  • The challenge is open 7 AM to 8 PM Mountain Time US.
  • The winner will be announced on Friday, depending on how early the judge gets up.

How it benefits you:

  • You get a nifty cool badge to display on your blog or site (because we’re all about promotion – you know you are!)
  • You get instant recognition of your writing prowess on this blog!
  • Your writing colleagues shall announce and proclaim your greatness on Bluesky, MeWe, Discord, and Mastodon, etc.

Our Judge for Week 730:

David A. Ludwig wearing a shirt that reads, "I'm not procrastinating, I'm doing side quests."

Gamer, writer, and responsive connoisseur of characters and stories, David Ludwig.

  1. The Bacon and Eggs Case

I’d settled in to Mona’s back booth, grabbed the morning Gazette, checked the obituaries to make sure I wasn’t there, when Mona brought my order. Thursday mornings it’s always the same. Crispy bacon leaning to burnt, eggs, over, and not all that easy, fried spuds if she had them, and white toast drowning in butter.

    Real butter.

There’s usually no chitchat. Mona doesn’t like to talk until around noon.

    I can relate.

This morning however she plunks herself down opposite me.

I start to dig in but Mona evidently has something on her mind.

“The eggs!” she says or asks. It’s unclear.

    “What about them?”

    “Like the colour?”

I want to chow down but instead I’m investigating my eggs.

    “They’re yellow,” I concede.

“Yeah,” she says, “ They’re yellow but…how yellow?”

I’m stumped. Yellow is yellow I’m thinking but what do I know.

“I buy my eggs from Sandy Waters…farmer outside of town. Free range chickens.”

    “Okay,” I say.

“These eggs are too pale. Something’s off.”

Me, I want to eat. Pale or vibrant yellow, they look scrumptious.”

I dig in again and Mona says, “Check it out for me.”

“So you want to know what’s up with the chickens?”

“Yeah, I do. While you’re at it, check out the pigs. Sandy supplies me bacon as well.”

Mona goes back to the kitchen.

    I eat my breakfast.

    It’s lip-smacking delicious.

    I’m thinking though.

    Pigs and Chickens.

    I’m out my depth.

    Maybe it’s time to retire.
