You pull the reader in and make them want to know more. Well done. “Mr Wu?” “Hello Trixi. Stacy? Megan? Which name is it today?” She’d never felt so naked. She wasn’t body conscious—it allowed her to be a stripper—but scantily clad before her best friend’s father’s stare made her feel small. This man ran the city. “If you’re looking for entertainment, I’d recommend one of the other—“ “No. That’s not why I’m here.” He passed her a paper. “Read this to me.” “Sir?” It was foreign. She felt surprised she could read it, but wondered why he asked. “Um, this is some accounting information from a city in China.” Mr. Wu nodded. “And this?” She scanned a photocopy, and read a few lines aloud, translated. “He can’t hear you. Dragons break silence like water through stone,” followed by a question building like a tension headache, which was not on the page. “What is this about, Mr. Wu?” He appraised her a moment, but not like a piece of meat. This was something else. “You speak Mandarin like you were born to it, but you’re not Chinese. My daughter, her friends—I’m told you have amnesia. You’re no one. No family. No past. You spoke Mandarin without knowing at Sussie’s party. You can read this, translate it; it’s a piece of your puzzle. I want to help you.” “Why?” He handed her his business card, “You’re my daughter’s friend,” and stood, “and because I want to know who you are.” She wondered herself as she watched the back of him. Siobhan Muir’s #ThursThreads Tales from Sept 2021

Welcome to the monthly round up of all my #ThursThreads tales.  It’s October and Halloween is just around the corner! Are you excited? Do you dress up? My whole family does because it’s just so fun. The Muirlettes are going for a steampunk pirate/ Elven assassin vibe this year. I’m just going as a sorceress because of my upcoming release the week before Halloween. You can see the cover in earlier posts and on my blog. Most of these bits are of upcoming tales, written to prompts from the #ThursThreads #flashfiction challenge I host each Thursday. We’re starting with Week 478 through Week 482 and I’ve collected them in one place. September had five Thursdays, so you get an extra tale this month along with their dates and prompts. Happy reading! ~~~~~~~~~ Week 478, September 2, 2021 Prompt: “You need to be careful.” “Marbles!” Kendra threw her arms around the demon. “I’m so glad to see you. I’ve missed you, sweetie.” Sweetie? Phinn rolled his eyes. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” “Hey, she’s saved your ass quite a few times so you need to work on your animosity.” Kendra narrowed her eyes before turning back to the tracker demon. “Show us the way to Summer, Marbles. We need to visit Phinn’s mom.” “What? Since when are we visiting my mother?” “Since I’m pretty sure she’s the only one who can help us get out of this situation and this realm.” She waved her hands at him to get moving. “Unless you know how to get us back home?” He scowled. “No.” “Well then.” She crouched in front of the demon. “Can you find Phinn’s mother?” “You know you need to be careful around that thing, right? And bringing it to my mother’s house is a recipe for disaster.” Kendra rolled her eyes. “The only recipe for disaster we have goin’ on is staying here. Marbles, show us the way.” She rose to her feet and waited for the tracker demon to pivot. The insane creature shot a look over its shoulder at him and he got the distinct impression it was tired of his antics. What the hell? But Marbles turned its attention toward the southern woods and strode off into the snow. Kendra followed in its footsteps without a backward glance. Phinn had no choice but to trail after them. 249 #CloudburstColorado words ~~~~~~~~~~ Week 479, September 9, 2021 Prompt: “Yet there was something there.” Mike could never afford the tuition at Rocky Mountain Preparatory Academy. But some of the wealthy parents had gotten friendly with him at the store and recommended Sierra for their scholarship program. She’d just started attending that fall and had impressed her teachers with her work ethic. His daughter was smart and creative, just like her egg-donor, and it didn’t surprise him in the least that she was doing well. He worried that her economic status might make her a target of the privileged and entitled rich kids, but so far there hadn’t been any problems. Sierra continued to chatter about her friend when she stopped mid-sentence and gasped. “Daddy! I saw a bobcat! Stop the truck!” He quickly pressed the brakes and slid to a stop, then put it in reverse to slowly back up. “Where did you see it? Was it really a bobcat?” “Yes, yes, I saw it.” Sierra pointed at a concrete block wall surrounding someone’s yard. “See? It’s right there. Do you see it?” He squinted, hoping to catch movement in the dim evening light. He held his breath and waited. He couldn’t see anything along the wall with the tree branches waving in the evening breeze. Yet there was something… “There! Do you see it now, Daddy?” A mama bobcat leapt to the top of the wall with a fluffy little bundle of spotted fur in her mouth. “Oh my glory. She’s moving kittens! I can’t believe it. Will they be okay?” 248 #WIP500 words ~~~~~~~~~ Week 480, September 16, 2021 Prompt: “You could stay.” “Sierra’s from a one-night-stand between friends. I wanted to keep her, but her mother wasn’t ready for kids.” He snorted. “Frankly, neither was I, but I asked her to carry the baby to term and I’d take on all the parenting. She graciously granted my wish and we parted ways once Sierra was born.” “And you haven’t heard from her since?” Mike shrugged. “I get a postcard or an email every now and again, but it’s few and far between. She travels a lot as an environmental activist, and she doesn’t have time for a family. It worked out well enough for me—we were friends, but not much more than that.” “And you have a great daughter out of the deal, right?” He nodded. “Exactly right. I sometimes worry that Sierra doesn’t have any siblings since I come from a family with five kids, two brothers and two sisters, but she seems to do very well making friends at school. She mentioned Sedona on the way here.” The doors to the theatre opened and the kids came out to the foyer to find their parents. “Looks like rehearsal’s done.” “So it does. And tomorrow’s the big night.” She rose with him as they waited for their kids to come out of the auditorium. “Hey, uhm, if you could stay a little longer, I’d appreciate it. I need to check with Sedona, but I’d like to talk to you again before you leave. Would that be okay?” 248 #WIP500 words ~~~~~~~~~~ Week 481, September 23, 2021 Prompt: “It wasn’t a question.” Mike nodded and grunted to the old man to keep the conversation short. Amanda had abandoned the counter and perused the electric hand tools section as he rung up the older man’s purchases. He kept going over what she’d proposed and found himself leaning toward accepting. What was the best that could happen? He’d be married to a beautiful, driven, dynamic woman who loved her kid and had money to spare.…

**Cover Reveal** – The Sorceress of Song and Flame

Cover Reveal sign being held by an excited redheaded woman in a pink shirt with glasses on her head

Good morning!  I’m so excited to have a cover reveal for THE SORCERESS OF SONG AND FLAME. In 2019 a friend posted one of those lists on Facebook where you choose the first letter of something and your friend’s name comes up. It was for a RPG game and the characters were things like Bard, Paladin, Rogue, Cleric, Monk, Barbarian, etc. The one for my name was Sorceress and my friend suggested we write stories for each. The idea was people from our everyday world were sucked into this fantasy world through a botched spell and suddenly they had the powers of the characters they became. It was right around the time of NaNoWriMo 2020 when I finally got the bug to write the Sorceress’s story. Fortunately, the story ended right around 50K words, so I won NaNo, and I had a whole new novel to share. I called it a win because 2020 sucked for writing. It took most of 2021 to get it edited, but it’s here now, available for Pre-Order, and it has a fantastic cover designed by Kris Norris. The best part? This is the first book I get to put a map image into the pages. I’m so excited for you to see where my characters go. After you read the excerpt, make sure to check out the Release Day Giveaway going on for this title. Let’s get to the cover! blurb Matsuko Ishikawa, Audiologist and Newbie Sorceress Being autistic, I’ve learned the patterns and rules of my world to make life easier. Everything I know is thrown into disarray when I find myself wearing long robes and setting fire to a wagon with blue flames… From my hands. I don’t know where I am… or how to control my new pyrotechnic talent. Throw in a guy who can turn into a dragon and a goddess-given quest, and I’m totally out of my depth. But if I complete the goddess’s task of finding a magical artifact, I can go home, which is the goal, right? Arach Uzekamanzi, Third Born Prince of the Dragonkin Being a 126-year-old dragon, there isn’t much that surprises me anymore, but Matsuko is completely new. And it’s pretty clear she’s not local. Accompanying her on a quest to find magical artifact seems like the best way learn more about her and stave off boredom. Now I just have to help Matsuko acquire the Song Stone, return it to the goddess’s temple, and get her home. But the more I learn about her, it becomes clear I’ll do just about anything to convince her to stay. Pre-order it here: Smashwords (all formats) Eden Books (mobi and epub) excerpt Matsuko Arach unlocked the cell door and stepped out into the aisle. He’s here because he needs a nap? I gaped at him as he moved to my door and with a flick of his wrist, unlocked that, too. “Are you coming?” I scrambled to my feet, but still hesitated on the threshold. Could I just walk out? I’d torched some of the buildings and though it had been an accident, I’d still done it. But I didn’t know the rules and I didn’t want to see what they’d do to an Asian woman they felt was a threat. Shooting looks either way down the aisle, I stepped out beside the man who’d become my impromptu friend. “Excellent. Let’s be on our way. Hopefully, the guards will be gaming as is their wont and we’ll slip out without them seeing us.” He gestured ahead and I followed him down the grimy hallway toward the front of the jail. The other prisoners watched us, though none of the made a move toward the aisle except the mean-looking unicorn. It tilted its head as I passed, like it considered me an intriguing snack, and I hurried my steps away. Voices from the guards filtered to us from their wardroom and the scents of unwashed male bodies increased. Not that the jail smelled wonderful to begin with, but unwashed men plus the heat of a smoky fire made for a pungent combination. I swallowed hard against the stench as fear tried to crawl up my throat. Quiet as a mouse, Matsuko. I used to be very good at making myself small and quiet. But I’d grown and could shoot fire from my hands. That was distinctly not quiet. Arach paused just before the light spilling into the hallway from the wardroom and placed a finger to his lips. I understood his suggestion and nodded as he moved to the wall farthest from the doorway to peer into the guards’ space. I don’t know what he saw, but he nodded to me and darted through the light to the other side without a sound. Then he motioned to me to copy his moves. I bit my lip and shifted to the opposite wall, anxiousness ramping up in my chest. Would the guards see me? Would they turn and look just at the wrong time? My hands started to tingle and I glanced down. Blue sparks flickered over my fingers, and I clenched them into fists as I shot a helpless look at Arach. Nothing like setting off fireworks when going for stealth. He grimaced and looked around like he was trying to figure out what to do. I tried to picture the serenity garden to calm myself down again. They don’t know you’re here. They can’t see you. They can’t hear you. Calm down. I took a deep breath and focused on letting the fearful energy slide away from me. Thankfully, it took the sparks with it and my hands stopped tingling. I blew my breath out and looked for Arach. He nodded and motioned me to come to him on the other side of the light. I gritted my teeth and pulled up my hood before I straightened my shoulders and skittered across the open space. Please don’t see me. Please don’t see me. I’m nothing but…

Snippet Sunday – New Anthology Coming!

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and I have two new releases coming. The first is in an anthology where the proceeds go to Planned Parenthood and NARAL in an effort to help keep women’s medical decisions between them and their doctors. There are 36 stories in this anthology by authors like Jackie Lau, Megan Frampton, Cecilia London, Elizabeth Cole, Zoe York, Alison Packard, and of course, me. My story is SEDUCING THE DRAGON, a historical paranormal romance that asks the question, what if you were selected to be the next virgin sacrifice? What would you do? The book is my response. In this snippet, Isabelle is asking the question because she’s pretty sure she’s going to be chosen next and not even her father will stop the village from choosing her. ~~~~~~So I’m not like my sisters, but that doesn’t mean I cannot find a man to bed me. But who? It’d have to be someone who didn’t know her, who wasn’t from the village or any of the hamlets near it. Someone who hadn’t heard the rumors about her or her mother. Working at her father’s tavern might help her. All those who came to Lochmore Cott stopped at the Careless Wench for a meal and drink. If there were any new travelers in town, she’d see them at the tavern. Am I really making the right decision? Cold dread hit her as the wind sent frozen tendrils down her back. Is there no man who will ask for my hand? Her father’s desperation to find her a husband grew stronger by the day, and no one had stepped forward to offer for her. Many men in the village saw her as a nuisance and troublemaker, and they didn’t want her near their womenfolk in case she’d infect them with whatever “ailed” her. Why couldn’t I be more like prim and proper Mary, or sweet little Sarah? Mary had married into another clan, and Sarah’s bans had been posted for Thomas MacArthur in Westerdale. Both had escaped the stupid tradition of the Virgin Sacrifice of Lochmore Cott. Which leaves only me. Isabelle had no intention of dying for the village, especially now with her mother gone. She may not have agreed to how women should behave, but she certainly didn’t want to die for her opinion. Sometimes she hated her village, but it was home and what she knew best. Her sister remained at the tavern while she waited for Thomas to gather his bride price, and Isabelle loved her. Sarah was the only one in the family besides their mother who’d accepted Isabelle for herself. So, if I don’t wish to die in the Virgin Sacrifice, I shall have to lose my virginity. ~~~~~~~ She’s talking to someone beyond his reckoning. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel. Here’s the blurb for SEDUCING THE DRAGON in the OUR CHOICE: ROMANCE FOR ROE Anthology: Available For Donation to PP or NARAL LEARN MORE Unless Isabelle finds a man to take her innocence, she may be the next virgin sacrifice. For Isabelle Andersen, being a virgin in a dragon-plagued Scottish village is a dangerous position. Potentially the next dragon sacrifice, Isabelle’s only way out is to lose her innocence, and fast. All she needs is one handsome stranger she can coax into bed, but Lochmore Cott doesn’t get much in the way of visitors. Jonarrion Swiftwind has sworn off virgins. The last time he took one to his bed, his family paid the price for his lust at the hands of her demon-possessed father. Since that night, he’s made it his mission to destroy demons and keep his bed virgin-free. Nothing distracts him from killing the demon-in-dragon’s-clothing until lovely Isabelle offers him a mug of tea. And her virginity. It takes just one night of passion for Jon to realize he doesn’t want to let the independent beauty go. Isabelle may have accepted her choices, but will she accept Jon when she discovers the only real dragon in her village… is him? Previously published as ‘Not a Dragon’s Standard Virgin’ through Siren Publishing.

One entry stood out as the winner, but choosing two HMs was hard since many weighed equally (and I feel totally targeted with shifters and bunnies!). Honorable Mentions David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Louisa says: The dialogue of Ludwig’s piece enticed me. Yes, I’m partial to bunnies, but the idea of the trickster spirit enchanted, and I enjoyed the movement of the short tale. Silver James | @SilverJames_ Louisa says: “If we claim her, there’s no problem.” It’s as easy as that line. I want more Moonstruck Mafia. winner announcement Week 483 Winner Gora Shade | @AngoraShade Louisa says: The opening line hooks the reader, and the mood carries through until the closer. The piece has a visceral feel, and comes to life through the detailed descriptions. The question, though: Who is the villain? She expected to feel pain. That would’ve been the rational expectation. Perhaps heat. Maybe pulling or tearing or something more. But it was more like a dull thing, sudden and shrill, shucking her breath away. She could smell metallic and was pretty sure she’d moved somehow, but just exactly where and how was foggy. There was an awful long time to think for a moment. Caught in time. She had a sick feeling there had been some dramatic change. “Vanessa?” She hasn’t noticed Royce. How long had he been standing there in the doorway? And had she left the hallway light on? Strange how he cast no shadow, illuminated from behind like an Xmas tree bulb. “It’s time to go.” She’d lost her train of thought. Something had just happened moments before. Someone else had been there. Wait. They still were. Rummaging about, messing up the neat piles of papers on her desk, tipping over her grandmother’s lamp, and smashing a photo on the floor. “Stop,” she yelled, reaching to grasp the villain’s arm. But something was wrong. “He can’t hear you, Vanessa.” Royce stretched out his hand as the hallway light behind him flew forward, absorbing or eliminating everything else. Everything but her. “Are you coming, or not?” Vanessa looked down. Down at herself. On the floor. A small hole in her chest still shimmering with blood. And then she remembered: Royce had died two years earlier. She took his hand thinking: death is too easy. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Six Time Winner Gora, and Honorable Mentions David and Silver!
