Snippet Sunday – Turn Inside Out

It’s time for Snippet Sunday and it’s the end of Cheyenne Frontier Days for the year. While I love the rodeo I’m always kinda glad when it’s over. Fewer people in town and less craziness. But in the spirit of CFD, I’m showing off ROPE A FALLING STAR in preparation for STAR SPANGLED BANNER coming out in September. In this snippet, you meet Tom Colton and he’s at the end of his bronc riding career. ~~~~~~ Tom lurched to his booted feet and searched for his hat in an attempt to quell the rising disappointment. Wooden Nickel hadn’t looked that strong or mean, but the little bastard could twist like a psychotic yoga instructor. The look in the roan bronc’s eyes when the boys opened the chute reminded him too much of the stallion in that animated kids’ movie about the wild horses of the Cimarron. He’d had enough time to think, Aw hell, before the horse took off like a bat out of hell. Yeah, if bats could twist into a black hole and turn inside out. His guts definitely felt inside out as the adrenaline drained out of him like someone had pulled the plug. The weight of his thirty-one years coupled with the disappointment of an unfinished ride crashed into him all at once. He could barely convince his legs to move across the arena after he retrieved his hat. He thumped it against his leg to knock the dirt out of it before he dumped it on his head. Wouldn’t that just be a kick in the gut? “Aw, too bad, folks. Give Tom Colton a round of applause. Three-time champion bronc rider from right here in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Tom has competed in Cheyenne Frontier Days for the last ten years…” The announcer’s voice faded from his awareness as Tom reached the chutes. Max Darnell waved him over to the gap in the fence and slapped him on the back as he came through. “Tough break, Colton. I told you Wooden Nickel kicked the shit out of everyone.” Tom nodded, but had to admit he wasn’t sure it was just the horse. His heart hadn’t been in the rides lately. ~~~~~~~ Guess even a hard-headed cowboy knows when it’s time to quit. 😉 There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, Kathy Griffith Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel. Here’s the blurb for ROPE A FALLING STAR: Available Wide Now Only the best stars fall… Three time bronc-riding champion Tom Colton’s dream of a fourth title ends when he draws Wooden Nickel, a mean little bronc with more twists than a maze. With his heart no longer in rodeo, he figures it’s time to go home to the Triple Star Ranch, the PTSD therapy ranch he and his dad founded to help others with trauma in their pasts. Tom just wants a little time to nurse his hurts and consider his next move. Amber Hillcrest started out as a Triple Star client and stayed on as a massage therapist. Her dog Nimbus keeps her PTSD in check, but her heart remains bruised. She knows she’s too old and too broken for love, especially with the son of her boss, but he’s hot enough to fill her fantasies for years to come. Amber tries to keep it professional between them, but Tom proves too irresistible with his big heart and charm. But someone is sabotaging the Triple Star and the neighboring Fantasy Ranch, and an ex-girlfriend keeps coming around, trying to reconnect with Tom. Tom’s hands are full of problems instead of the luscious massage therapist. But when Amber gets kidnapped, Tom will move heaven and earth to get her back and tell her how he truly feels.

It weighed too heavy on me, knowing I should have taken her seriously. “Gonna be a busy night, Davis.” Cap dropped the report on my desk. “It’s just like your Oracle said. There’s at least five bodies on site.” “They died in the fire?” “No.” A new voice joined the conversation. Dr. Rachel Murray, County Medical Examiner, was covered in soot and dirt. “Were you on site?” “Did you think I wouldn’t be after receiving your message?” She griimaced. “I made certain I was on call.” “And?” “Your oracle’s either the real deal, or a disturbingly fearless criminal.” She picked at the dirt beneath her fingernails. “I’m rather inclined to believe the former.” “She’s not my oracle.” I fisted my hands to keep from balling the papers on my desk in a fit of temper. Or in a last ditch effort to hide any betraying tremor. “And those bodies were not fresh,” Rachel said. “But had the fire gone unchecked, it would have incinerated any number of sins.” She told me the truth. “Gut instincts aside,” Cap said, “we need confirmation. She better have a concrete alibi. Oracle abilities are unreliable at best, and unfortunately there’s no blood or skill test to validate her.” “So she’s a suspect until she can prove otherwise.” “And probably even after that for some. If she’s the real deal—” Rachel sighed. “Protect her, Davis. She’ll need you.”~~~~~~~ Congratulations TWENTY-NINE TIME WINNER Cara, and Honorable Mentions Bill, and David! But the choice is yours and nobody else. Winner Announcement Week 371 Winner Kel J. Heinen | @Aightball Luanne says: I want more. Short but kept me guessing. Who is in charge of the sands? A child. The near-silent drip of sand against glass echoes around me. Thousands of shelves hold hour glasses, the sand telling how much longer every human has left. And in charge of it all is Maddie, a fourteen-year-old girl who died of cancer. Maddie puts her dust rag down. “Gonna be a busy night.” “Oh?” “Had, like, a hundred hour glasses float up this morning.” “Well, busy makes the night go faster.” She’s not herself today and I’m not sure if I should ask why; teenagers are touchy about feelings. But then the tears start to fall. “What’s wrong?” She points to an hour glass on her desk. ‘Abby Glassmaker’ is etched on the front, with her picture. It takes me a second to see the resemblance. “Why is it Mom’s turn?” She wipes her eyes. I pull her into a tight hug, my eyes subconsciously roaming to find my mom’s hour glass. “When the hour glass rattles, it’s time to go.” Maddie holds me for a long time, fresh tears wetting my shoulder. That’s the downside to her job: she was bound to know when it was her parent’s time. “Thank you.” Confused, I blink. “For what, hon?” She pulls back, wiping her eyes. “You waited with me. Thank you.” I take a deep breath. “Of course, sweetie. No way I was going to leave you alone.” The door to the room opens and Maddie bolts into her mother’s arms. I slip out the back way, leaving them to their reunion. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Seven Time Winner Kel, and Honorable Mentions M.T., Mason, and Sheilagh! Snippet Sunday – He’s the One

It’s time for Snippet Sunday. I’m working on a new series of books filled with snark, humor, and paranormal bikers, and the third one is coming along. And the fourth is in the works. Today I’m showcasing DUDE WITH A COOL CAR and we’re in Karma’s POV. (all in first person) She’s talking to Viper, the club’s security chief, about listening devices and cameras. Coop found all the ones in her cabin. ~~~~~~ I nodded, suitably impressed. Coop said he was a PI. More than likely he was sneakier than the regular sneaks and hackers. For some reason, that made me feel more secure rather than less. “And he got the ones I stashed in his car. The man’s thorough.” She didn’t know the half of it. But Viper was talking about finding electronic visitors, not sex, and I wasn’t about to enlighten her. “Flint and Torch are hanging out at the barn and are kinda keeping an eye on what he does when he comes out of your door.” I barked a laugh at that. Flint was a gargoyle, the original Concrete Angel, and Torch was a dragon. Yeah, that kind of dragon. He wore a human disguise pretty well and most people didn’t know he could bench-press a Peterbilt with a full trailer. But when I looked carefully, I could see the head, neck, horns, and tail of his draconian self against the night sky. Though Viper was as human as Coop, she had some talents that made me question her heritage, and she knew about all us “other” members of the club. Only a small cadre of the human inner circle knew about those of us who weren’t human. But besides Michael, Luke, and me, no one else knew Loki was the real Loki, Norse God of Mischief and Trickery. Not even Torch and Flint, though it was hard to tell what the gargoyle did or didn’t know. He rarely spoke, and never aloud. “Thanks for putting them on watch. We’ll all be safer for it, including Coop.” Viper nodded. “He’s the one, isn’t he?” “What?” I blinked. “The One. The center of your soul, your heart of hearts, the happily-ever-after. You know, all the clichés. Coop’s your one-and-only, isn’t he?” ~~~~~~~ Oops, someone else noticed. Here’s the blurb for DUDE WITH A COOL CAR: Available Wide Now Bikers, Badge, and Backlog: Marshal DeVille always gets his man…and his Karma. Cooper DeVille, US Marshal Being undercover has its perks. I get to do stuff the day-to-day me would never experience. Like infiltrating the Concrete Angels Motorcycle Club and meeting Karma, the gorgeous Enforcer of the MC. Being handcuffed to her bed is a dream, but that’s the problem with undercover work. Everything I’m doing here is only half true. The Concrete Angels—and Karma—are connected to Backlog, a shadow organization infiltrating law enforcement. The Fed undercover here before me was Backlog’s bitch, and now he’s dead. I have to determine which side of this fight the Concrete Angels are on… before Karma comes to bite me in ways I won’t enjoy. Karma, Concrete Angels’ Enforcer You bet your ass, I’m that karma, the one people pray never catches up to them. But my own karma has found me, seeing as the hunky P.I. who drove into the MC compound with his cool car is my Goddess-chosen true mate. But as my luck—and the Goddess’ sense of humor—would have it, Cooper’s an undercover US Marshal trying to ferret out our connection to a group called Backlog. Would’ve been nice to know before I took him to bed and discovered he’s the best damn submissive this Madam could want, because I don’t deal well with liars. And no one’s happy when Karma’s pissed. But Backlog has Cooper in its sights, and to survive… my mate might just have to die.

Heinen | @Aightball Honorable Mentions Joe Hesch | @JAHesch Isabella says: I thoroughly enjoyed the opening scene and its wonderful phrasing. Right from the beginning, I had a clear picture of Ben’s brooding figure at the bar and sympathized with his plight. I also found the way in which he viewed breakup refreshing. It’s not often that I see someone try to see the positive side of a breakup. That little twist at the end was also rather entertaining to read! Bill Engleson | @billmelaterplea Isabella says: I really enjoyed the message of this piece: to take what you’re given and make the most of it. I think it’s become a bit of a lost philosophy these days and that’s a shame. Kel J. Heinen | @Aightball Isabella says: This was a fun piece to read and relate to! My little sister had a similar taste and flare for the dramatic when she was that age! winner announcement Week 370 Winner Mark A. Morris Isabella says: I’m a bit of a sucker for the paranormal and macabre, so this piece was right up my alley! The vivid imagery painted a clear, yet slightly disturbing image in my mind as if I were there watching the scene unfold right beside poor Annie. I watched my brother, remembering his life. He looked at peace, his face calm. Warren sat up, the single lamp shrouding his face in shadows. I fell sideways, the shock of seeing him move parting me from the chair. I hit the concrete floor awkwardly, my cry echoing around me. I was suddenly afraid; I should have been glad to see him stirring but this was too late, the time for miracles long past. “Annie,” he said, his voice unfamiliar. “How kind. You waited with me.” He pushed the lower half of his casket’s lid back, bending forward at the waist to reveal that he was dressed in the suit he’d been married in. I saw it had needed adjustment, the wasting of his flesh making it too large for him, its sleeves hanging limp like becalmed flags in summer. He looked like a child in his father’s clothes, turning my memory into a deceit. “It’s not you,” I said, wishing that the minister was still with me. He’d left an hour ago – maybe more – I think I’d possibly slept, the stresses of the last week finally settling on me. “Does it matter?” He yawned, levering first one leg then the other up and then out of the coffin. He sat on the edge, his eyes brighter than they’d ever been, the hellfire burning inside him intense enough to cast its own shadows. “He’s gone to a better place, that’s what the clergyman would say. Comfortable lies.”~~~~~~~ Congratulations Twelve time Winner Mark, and Honorable Mentions Joe, Bill, and Kel! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! Pass on the great news on Twitter, Facebook, MeWe, shiny mirrors, Morse Code, and signal flags. Check out all the original tales HERE. Thanks for stopping by and happy reading! 🙂
