Morris Sheilagh Lee | @SweetSheil David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Mark Ethridge | @mysoulstears Siobhan Muir | @SiobhanMuir Mary says: First off – just managing to get something in this close to the Holidays is hard – I’m not sure if I envy or honor all of you, probably a bit of both. I always enjoy Thursday’s Threads and today was no different. Thank you, all, for writing!  Honorable Mentions Catherine Verdier | @CatheVerdier Mary says: You bring us into the middle of a rather moody piece that is filled with paranoia and the fact that he really is out to get you— I love the resolve to not just wait for death to come, but to have the heroine face it on their terms. Well Done. Sheilagh Lee | @SweetSheil Mary says: I love the imagery of being cursed – and finding happiness in the end. Not all curses are all bad. A truth we should learn. Bravo. Special Mention: Siobhan Muir Mary says: Although she’s not eligible to win, I loved Siobhan’s entry for having the answer that I’ve always wanted when it comes to the “Do you know who I am?” type of question. – “I can, I know, and he will.” winner announcement Week 492 Winner Mark Ethridge | @mysoulstears Mary says: If you’ve ever had a mimosa tree – you know how invasive they can be— how they can take over and then at some point they just… stop. The story is true for trees, and sadly relationships. This story touches on all of that and hints at so much more. There I was, standing in my backyard, reciprocating saw with a nine inch wood cutting blade in my hands. I’d plugged it into the 200 foot long extension cord that ran from the house. It started 27 years ago, when the tree sprouted from the ground. She told me not to cut it. “Wait and see what it does.” Six months later, she declared it was a mimosa tree, and she liked it, and we were going to let it grow. The years went by, and it grew like a weed. Must have reached 30 feet tall. Had three main branches from the trunk, and those had several branches of their own. For the first twenty years, it grew, and each year, it leafed out, and it filled the back yard with pink mimosa flowers, and hundreds of seed pods. Until the year it stopped. That’s it. It just stopped. No leaves. No flowers. No seed pods. Nothing. The leaves all fell off for the winter, and they never came back. I left it alone for years, because she’d told me not to cut it down all those years ago. But, finally, she decided it was dead, and needed to go. Which was why I was standing there. Looking at that dead tree. And why I looked at the saw in my hands, and asked, “Any volunteers to put him out of his misery?” The saw happily ripped that dead tree down.~~~~~~~ Congratulations Ten Time Winner Mark, and Honorable Mentions Catherine and Sheilagh! Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Louisa Bacio Honorable Mentions Mark Ethridge | @mysoulstears Nicola says: Fantastic literary job of a father and daughter bonding over how enraging human beings can be. Miya Kressin | @miya_kressin Nicola says: Excellent, visually evocative scene-setting. Although if Atch had really cracked his fingernail he’d be hopping around the yard yelling in pain. Mark A. Morris Nicola says: Lovely surrealistic piece, almost Carrollian in its nonsensical imagery. winner announcement Week 491 Winner Louisa Bacio | @Louisabacio Nicola says: Set the scene so perfectly I felt like I was there. Beautifully delineated concept from beginning to end. He knelt on the cushioned platform, muscles bulging and eyes clenched shut. The veins along his thighs and neck jutted almost as visually as his erect c—. The lines of his jaw tensed. Janna ached for him. They’d strung him out so long without any release. He’d volunteered for the role, probably some machismo bullshit on outlasting anyone else, never realizing he’d relinquished any power once he’d stripped off his three-piece suit and necktie. Joy Ride, the women’s group, met once a quarter and every so often held special events. When Janna tapped Luca as a potential subject, she didn’t expect him to be chosen or to say yes. “Do you know what happens when a man’s balls turn blue for too long?” The leader strutted onto the stage, sweeping her arm toward Luca. “They’d become like stone!” an audience member behind Jenna called out. Laughter rumbled through the crowd, way more of a cackling, a heckling of his abundant manhood. Not a giggle passed through her lips. She’d fantasized about licking those balls, driving him wild as much as he did her in the office. The way the cut of his pants clung to his ass when he leaned over a desk, or late in the evening when he removed his jacket and rolled the sleeves of his white buttoned-up shirt to right below the elbows. “Any volunteers to put him out of his misery?” Luca opened his eyes and focused directly on her. She raised her hand. “Me.”~~~~~~~ Congratulations Ten Time Winner Louisa, and Honorable Mentions Mark, Miya, and Mark Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. Decker | @mishmhem Honorable Mentions Miya Kressin | @miya_kressin Katheryn says: I really like the King Arthur vibes of this! It’s a short piece but it’s packed with lore and tickles the imagination. The main character is immediately likeable, and I’m curious to see what kind of leader he’ll be. Silver James | @SilverJames_ Katheryn says: The tension in this is thick and I love it! You get just enough from each character to really see their personalities, and enough of the wider story to hook you. Can’t wait to read more. Patty Dump | @pattydump1 Katheryn says: You can feel the speaker’s frustration with the brother, and that makes this a fun read. Pair that with the imagery and excitement at having the brother meet the woman in the painting and now I need to see when it finally happens! winner announcement Week 490 Winner Mark A. Morris Katheryn says: This is straight up haunting. The build up to the end, and the tension as the story goes on is really well-executed. A very neat take on immortality and its cost, too. This is the kind of story that lingers in your head long after you’ve read it. China Edith watched him out of the corner of her eye. He was unapologetic and proud, his chest forward and his shoulders pushed back. “I’d have thought you’d be happy,” he said, choosing a fine, lint-free cloth. “It was very much what you asked for, wasn’t it?” The alchemist took her right hand and lifted it, holding it up against the light. It was already a porcelain white, but it still wasn’t satisfactory. There was a flaw in the glaze, a roughness in its finish, an irregularity in the way the stain had fused. She tried to resist him, to snatch it back, but there was nothing she could do. Her muscles wouldn’t respond to her will; they’d become like stone. “I think you’re going be one of my favourites. You had the cheekbones, the jawline, a perfect nose. There was so very little I had to correct.” He manipulated her fingers, articulating the individual sections of each one, sensitive to their alignment and the curve of her palm. A tear brimmed against the rim of her eyelid, then dropped down her cheek. An hour ago, she would have cursed, would have brushed it away, would have worried about her makeup. Two hours ago, she should have refused the offer he made. Perfection. And immortality. And a face that would never age. She’d thought he’d been joking. Or that he’d been a vampire. Either way, she’d nothing to lose. A model was always super-aware of how she looked. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations TWENTY-SIX TIME WINNER Mark, and Honorable Mentions Miya, Silver, and Patty! #ThursThreads – Week 489 – Winners

Week 489 of #ThursThreads had many fantastic tales. What an amazing feat we’ve pulled off. Nine years! If you’ve been doing it a while, thank you for coming back each week. If you’ve just found us, welcome! You’re in good company. May you come back again and write more great flash. A thousand thanks to Eric Martell for judging this week. Just a reminder, there will be NO #THURSTHREADS next week in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. We’ll see y’all back here in two weeks. Entries: Bill Engleson | @billmelaterplea Sheilagh Lee | @SweetSheil Silver James | @SilverJames_ Catherine Verdier | @CatheVerdier Siobhan Muir | @SiobhanMuir David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Mark A. Morris Honorable Mention Sheilagh Lee | @SweetSheil Eric says: Fifty years is a long time, and whole lives can be lived. Visiting those who we knew when we were young doesn’t always involve bringing offspring, but it always involves bringing the baggage of our lives. You can’t go home again, but you can reconnect and move forward. winner announcement Week 489 Winner Mark A. Morris Eric says: This story does a nice job of transporting us to death row, with its attendant cruelty. Who is Haggerty, and why does he want to die? Who’s the narrator – a guard, a psychologist? There’s more here, and good stories make us want to see what else there is. “Come in,” I said, offering him a smile. It would be the last one he’d see. He’d been waiting for this day for over a year, refusing any offers of leniency. It was unusual for a killer to choose to die; most the men on the row preferred to linger, hoping their appeals would be granted. And while they were waiting, they’d relish the sport, baiting the relatives of their victims and the police, eking out the remainder of their sentences slipping out half-truths and lies. Haggerty was a cool one. He’d shown no interest in head games, his behaviour more that of one of the hopefuls who claimed to be innocent. His removal from the general population was a matter of routine, not for their protection. He was a spent force, it seemed. Either that or there was no one here who could satisfy his requirements. “You’re very quiet,” I went on. “I’d have thought you’d be happy. I know you’ve just had chicken, fries and a quart of root beer. And a pack of cigarettes too – not that you got the time to finish them.” But nothing. Not even a glimmer of a reaction. I’d hoped to be able to reach him: break through his barriers to release the rage that compelled him. I tried again. I pressed the button to open the window of the viewing gallery. “Well, look at that,” I said. “You’ve got an audience. Maybe word got out that you were dying today.”~~~~~~~ Congratulations TWENTY-FIVE TIME WINNER Mark, and Honorable Mention Sheilagh! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. My first note for this was “What’s going to happen next?”. I love stories that make me want more and I will go back to read. Catherine Verdier | @CatheVerdier Patricia says: as I was reading this story I just want to jump in and help this poor girl. I just love stories that make me care that much for the characters. winner announcement Week 488 Winner Teresa Eccles | @TeresaMEccles Patricia says: this story was well written, easy to follow and I could see where it could keep going. I felt the emotions jump off of page at me. Congratulations. LeeAnn walked in as Sherry let out a heavy sigh. “How’s it going?” “Terrible.” “It’s small, yeah?” “It’s been small. Stuff has started to get out of hand, though. I mean, look at this!” Sherry held up a huge stack of papers. “LeeAnn, this was supposed to be a little contest with maybe ten entries. How in the world did this many people even find out about it?” LeeAnn shrugged. “Maybe word got out?” Sherry stopped and shot LeeAnn a hard stare. “What did you do?” LeeAnn grabbed a piece of candy and shoved it in her mouth, shaking her head and pointing to her full mouth, making noises around the caramel as if she were trying to speak. “LeeAnn! You know I don’t have time to read all these essays. Why would you do this?” LeeAnn chewed faster, holding up her index finger at Sherry, causing Sherry to roll her eyes and put both hands on her hips as she waited. “You’ve worked so hard to make your shop a success, I knew that one little sign on your door wouldn’t bring in many entries. And, isn’t the whole point of this contest to bring more attention to your store? I may have posted the contest on social media.” Sherry’s eyebrows shot up. “And added an uh . . . incentive.” Sherry’s eyes closed in disbelief. “LeeAnn, I do not believe you.” She drew a deep breath and handed some papers to LeeAnn. “Fine. You’re reading essays, too.” ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Five Time Winner Teresa, and Honorable Mentions Sheilagh, Silver, and Catherine! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. Honorable Mentions Sheilagh Lee | @SweetSheil George says: The big sister will be there for a long, long time. I loved the intensity of the scene. It went well and I liked the undead twist. Overall, its a good tale with a good amount of emotion. Miya Kressin | @miya_kressin George says: Great tale, I loved the eroticism the scene alludes to and the unexpected consequence the heroine finds herself in. The tale was well written and ended on a creepy note. I feel sorry for the heroine but curious to find out what’s next. winner announcement Week 487 Winner Silver James | @SilverJames_ George says: This was a tough choice and in the end it came down to the ending. The kittens win. I loved the big, bad vibe the story had and that it ended on cute protective twist and almost Indiana Jones-like dilemma: it had to be cats. Whether these mobsters have it in them for harm or do they let the theft slide is for the next scene. Good tale awesome ending. Ronan looked up from the paperwork he’d been studying. Brendan stood in the doorway, shifting foot-to-foot, looking everywhere but at him. He waited, knowing the other man wouldn’t have intruded without reason. “Uh…boss?” Brendan still didn’t meet his eyes. “What is it?” “Well, ya see…” The younger man inhaled and finally met his gaze. “Finn came t’me because things have gone missin’.” Ronan straightened. “Someone’s been stealin’ from the bar?” “Well…sort of.” “Sort of? Who?” “Yeah, it’s been small stuff. And the girl, she’s been actin’ suspicious.” “Which girl?” “Bowie’s. Fee. Fiona. She’s been sneakin’ out of his place. Plus she’s been helpin’ Finn out in the back.” “Where’s Bowie?” “Downstairs.” “And Fiona?” “That’s the thing, boss. She slipped out the back door about five minutes ago.” Ronan pushed out of his chair. “Let’s go.” They found her behind the dumpster and confronted her. Fiona, eyes brimming with tears, faced them down. “I can’t abandon them.” Her chin jutted at a stubborn angle despite the tremor in her voice. The three men exchanged wary glances. Female tears plus a fiery temper boded ill for them. Something yowled, a pitifully weak sound. That’s when they saw the milk carton and the rag-filled wooden box at her feet. Green eyes snapped at them as she squatted and snuggled four tiny kittens in her arms. “And I won’t let you hurt them.” Bowie rubbed the back of his neck. “Cats. It had to be cats.” What were Wolves to do? ~~~~~~~ Congratulations FIFTY-FIVE TIME WINNER Silver, and Honorable Mentions Sheilagh and Miya! Silver James | @SilverJames_ Nikki says: I really want to read Moonstuck Mafia, a great 250 words! winner announcement Week 486 Winner Miya Kressin | @miya_kressin Nikki says: Loved this story! Please tell me you’re writing the book?! Very vivid and made me want more. Brilliant 248 words. A supernova illuminated what should have been the night sky. Witches cowered beneath the trees, waiting— praying—that it wasn’t the sign they’d feared would come. If the Chief Warlock had awakened the gatekeepers of the eldritch powers, there would be no way to keep the elements in balance against that onslaught. “We can still work on behalf of the Green, brother.” Dalyn cupped my shoulder, his witch-mark an angry red as the sky remained afire. “It’s not over yet. The stone rings might not be the targets they’re aiming for. We have a chance.” A pile of dead bodies, our willing sacrifices, littered the ground around the altar slab. “I don’t know how much longer we can keep asking them to sacrifice themselves to save a dying world.” Dalyn, only half-human in body and less than in mind, cocked his head to the side. “Come to Faerie with me. If this world is doomed, come do your duty for the Green in a realm untouched by their corruption.” “I’m their High Priest. I can’t abandon them. Not to what’s coming.” His eyes shimmer, and he lets his fae nature shine through—a vivid turquoise swirl around each pupil. “You are the Green’s High Priest. They would rather you serve in Fae than die to save dying humans.” “I can’t leave them!” He smiles then. “You won’t. I’m taking you.” The last thing I see is a green glow of a portal spell triggering in front of me. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Six Time Winner Miya, and Honorable Mentions Catherine and Silver! Cara Michaels | @caramichaels Siobhan says: I really love meet-cutes, and this one is both sweet and sultry. Nicely done.  M.T. Decker | @mishmhem Siobhan says: Knowing MT, I knew this wouldn’t be what it seemed, but I still laughed aloud when the true objective became clear. Nicely done. winner announcement Week 485 Winner Katheryn J. Avila | @katheryn_avila Siobhan says: I loved the mix of attraction and second-guessing the female character did when it came to love, but utter confidence and focus when it came to a threat. And the befuddlement of the male character when she suddenly showed up in his room. Perfect. It feels good to be rid of the layers, to kick the heavy skirts away and crawl into bed. Why Celeste chose such a cumbersome dress for me, I’ll never know. I’ll also never forgive her, and force my sister into something equally terrible for her if I ever get married. In bed, exhaustion sits heavy in my bones, but sleep doesn’t come. Embarrassment won’t let it. What was I thinking, asking Nolan to stay? Stupid. With sleep out of reach, I pull on a dress slip before stepping onto the balcony. The warm air is still, like something holding its breath. I listen for my magic. The wards I placed on the newlyweds’ room sit intact, but something doesn’t feel right. Moonlight flashes in the corner of my vision. When I look, my eyes land on a group scaling the side of the building, armed with swords. I duck, hiding but keeping an eye on the intruders. If they’re after the princesses, they’re on the wrong side of the building. I’m in Nolan’s room before I realize I made the decision. “Nora – what?” His voice chokes, eyes lingering on my less than modest clothes. “I-” “Don’t flatter yourself – that’s not why I’m here.” I move to his window – a closer vantage point. “Assassins.” “The princesses?” He joins me by the window, offering a spare shirt. “Might not be the targets.” I pull the shirt over the slip. “Let’s greet our guests, shall we?” Time to blow off some steam.~~~~~~~ Congratulations Fourteen Time Winner Katheryn, and Honorable Mentions Eric, Cara, and M.T.! Morris Luanne says: Proving that mysteries are sometimes of our own making, and all we can do is try to remember- this one made me tear up. winner announcement Week 484 Winner Gora Shade | @AngoraShade Luanne says: This week’s winning story is a haunting mystery that both intrigues and delights. You pull the reader in and make them want to know more. Well done. “Mr Wu?” “Hello Trixi. Stacy? Megan? Which name is it today?” She’d never felt so naked. She wasn’t body conscious—it allowed her to be a stripper—but scantily clad before her best friend’s father’s stare made her feel small. This man ran the city. “If you’re looking for entertainment, I’d recommend one of the other—“ “No. That’s not why I’m here.” He passed her a paper. “Read this to me.” “Sir?” It was foreign. She felt surprised she could read it, but wondered why he asked. “Um, this is some accounting information from a city in China.” Mr. Wu nodded. “And this?” She scanned a photocopy, and read a few lines aloud, translated. “He can’t hear you. Dragons break silence like water through stone,” followed by a question building like a tension headache, which was not on the page. “What is this about, Mr. Wu?” He appraised her a moment, but not like a piece of meat. This was something else. “You speak Mandarin like you were born to it, but you’re not Chinese. My daughter, her friends—I’m told you have amnesia. You’re no one. No family. No past. You spoke Mandarin without knowing at Sussie’s party. You can read this, translate it; it’s a piece of your puzzle. I want to help you.” “Why?” He handed her his business card, “You’re my daughter’s friend,” and stood, “and because I want to know who you are.” She wondered herself as she watched the back of him. Yes, I’m partial to bunnies, but the idea of the trickster spirit enchanted, and I enjoyed the movement of the short tale. Silver James | @SilverJames_ Louisa says: “If we claim her, there’s no problem.” It’s as easy as that line. I want more Moonstruck Mafia. winner announcement Week 483 Winner Gora Shade | @AngoraShade Louisa says: The opening line hooks the reader, and the mood carries through until the closer. The piece has a visceral feel, and comes to life through the detailed descriptions. The question, though: Who is the villain? She expected to feel pain. That would’ve been the rational expectation. Perhaps heat. Maybe pulling or tearing or something more. But it was more like a dull thing, sudden and shrill, shucking her breath away. She could smell metallic and was pretty sure she’d moved somehow, but just exactly where and how was foggy. There was an awful long time to think for a moment. Caught in time. She had a sick feeling there had been some dramatic change. “Vanessa?” She hasn’t noticed Royce. How long had he been standing there in the doorway? And had she left the hallway light on? Strange how he cast no shadow, illuminated from behind like an Xmas tree bulb. “It’s time to go.” She’d lost her train of thought. Something had just happened moments before. Someone else had been there. Wait. They still were. Rummaging about, messing up the neat piles of papers on her desk, tipping over her grandmother’s lamp, and smashing a photo on the floor. “Stop,” she yelled, reaching to grasp the villain’s arm. But something was wrong. “He can’t hear you, Vanessa.” Royce stretched out his hand as the hallway light behind him flew forward, absorbing or eliminating everything else. Everything but her. “Are you coming, or not?” Vanessa looked down. Down at herself. On the floor. A small hole in her chest still shimmering with blood. And then she remembered: Royce had died two years earlier. She took his hand thinking: death is too easy. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Six Time Winner Gora, and Honorable Mentions David and Silver!
