Siobhan Muir’s #ThursThreads Tales from Sept 2021

Welcome to the monthly round up of all my #ThursThreads tales.  It’s October and Halloween is just around the corner! Are you excited? Do you dress up? My whole family does because it’s just so fun. The Muirlettes are going for a steampunk pirate/ Elven assassin vibe this year. I’m just going as a sorceress because of my upcoming release the week before Halloween. You can see the cover in earlier posts and on my blog. Most of these bits are of upcoming tales, written to prompts from the #ThursThreads #flashfiction challenge I host each Thursday. We’re starting with Week 478 through Week 482 and I’ve collected them in one place. September had five Thursdays, so you get an extra tale this month along with their dates and prompts. Happy reading! ~~~~~~~~~ Week 478, September 2, 2021 Prompt: “You need to be careful.” “Marbles!” Kendra threw her arms around the demon. “I’m so glad to see you. I’ve missed you, sweetie.” Sweetie? Phinn rolled his eyes. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” “Hey, she’s saved your ass quite a few times so you need to work on your animosity.” Kendra narrowed her eyes before turning back to the tracker demon. “Show us the way to Summer, Marbles. We need to visit Phinn’s mom.” “What? Since when are we visiting my mother?” “Since I’m pretty sure she’s the only one who can help us get out of this situation and this realm.” She waved her hands at him to get moving. “Unless you know how to get us back home?” He scowled. “No.” “Well then.” She crouched in front of the demon. “Can you find Phinn’s mother?” “You know you need to be careful around that thing, right? And bringing it to my mother’s house is a recipe for disaster.” Kendra rolled her eyes. “The only recipe for disaster we have goin’ on is staying here. Marbles, show us the way.” She rose to her feet and waited for the tracker demon to pivot. The insane creature shot a look over its shoulder at him and he got the distinct impression it was tired of his antics. What the hell? But Marbles turned its attention toward the southern woods and strode off into the snow. Kendra followed in its footsteps without a backward glance. Phinn had no choice but to trail after them. 249 #CloudburstColorado words ~~~~~~~~~~ Week 479, September 9, 2021 Prompt: “Yet there was something there.” Mike could never afford the tuition at Rocky Mountain Preparatory Academy. But some of the wealthy parents had gotten friendly with him at the store and recommended Sierra for their scholarship program. She’d just started attending that fall and had impressed her teachers with her work ethic. His daughter was smart and creative, just like her egg-donor, and it didn’t surprise him in the least that she was doing well. He worried that her economic status might make her a target of the privileged and entitled rich kids, but so far there hadn’t been any problems. Sierra continued to chatter about her friend when she stopped mid-sentence and gasped. “Daddy! I saw a bobcat! Stop the truck!” He quickly pressed the brakes and slid to a stop, then put it in reverse to slowly back up. “Where did you see it? Was it really a bobcat?” “Yes, yes, I saw it.” Sierra pointed at a concrete block wall surrounding someone’s yard. “See? It’s right there. Do you see it?” He squinted, hoping to catch movement in the dim evening light. He held his breath and waited. He couldn’t see anything along the wall with the tree branches waving in the evening breeze. Yet there was something… “There! Do you see it now, Daddy?” A mama bobcat leapt to the top of the wall with a fluffy little bundle of spotted fur in her mouth. “Oh my glory. She’s moving kittens! I can’t believe it. Will they be okay?” 248 #WIP500 words ~~~~~~~~~ Week 480, September 16, 2021 Prompt: “You could stay.” “Sierra’s from a one-night-stand between friends. I wanted to keep her, but her mother wasn’t ready for kids.” He snorted. “Frankly, neither was I, but I asked her to carry the baby to term and I’d take on all the parenting. She graciously granted my wish and we parted ways once Sierra was born.” “And you haven’t heard from her since?” Mike shrugged. “I get a postcard or an email every now and again, but it’s few and far between. She travels a lot as an environmental activist, and she doesn’t have time for a family. It worked out well enough for me—we were friends, but not much more than that.” “And you have a great daughter out of the deal, right?” He nodded. “Exactly right. I sometimes worry that Sierra doesn’t have any siblings since I come from a family with five kids, two brothers and two sisters, but she seems to do very well making friends at school. She mentioned Sedona on the way here.” The doors to the theatre opened and the kids came out to the foyer to find their parents. “Looks like rehearsal’s done.” “So it does. And tomorrow’s the big night.” She rose with him as they waited for their kids to come out of the auditorium. “Hey, uhm, if you could stay a little longer, I’d appreciate it. I need to check with Sedona, but I’d like to talk to you again before you leave. Would that be okay?” 248 #WIP500 words ~~~~~~~~~~ Week 481, September 23, 2021 Prompt: “It wasn’t a question.” Mike nodded and grunted to the old man to keep the conversation short. Amanda had abandoned the counter and perused the electric hand tools section as he rung up the older man’s purchases. He kept going over what she’d proposed and found himself leaning toward accepting. What was the best that could happen? He’d be married to a beautiful, driven, dynamic woman who loved her kid and had money to spare.…

#ThursThreads – Week 483 – Winners

Week 483 of #ThursThreads had many fantastic tales. What an amazing feat we’ve pulled off. Nine years! If you’ve been doing it a while, thank you for coming back each week. If you’ve just found us, welcome! You’re in good company. May you come back again and write more great flash. A thousand thanks to Louisa Bacio for judging this week. Morris Sheilagh Lee | @SweetSheil David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Siobhan Muir | @SiobhanMuir Kelly Heinen | @Aightball Louisa says: This week proved to be extremely difficult to judge. One entry stood out as the winner, but choosing two HMs was hard since many weighed equally (and I feel totally targeted with shifters and bunnies!). Honorable Mentions David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Louisa says: The dialogue of Ludwig’s piece enticed me. Yes, I’m partial to bunnies, but the idea of the trickster spirit enchanted, and I enjoyed the movement of the short tale. Silver James | @SilverJames_ Louisa says: “If we claim her, there’s no problem.” It’s as easy as that line. I want more Moonstruck Mafia. winner announcement Week 483 Winner Gora Shade | @AngoraShade Louisa says: The opening line hooks the reader, and the mood carries through until the closer. The piece has a visceral feel, and comes to life through the detailed descriptions. The question, though: Who is the villain? She expected to feel pain. That would’ve been the rational expectation. Perhaps heat. Maybe pulling or tearing or something more. But it was more like a dull thing, sudden and shrill, shucking her breath away. She could smell metallic and was pretty sure she’d moved somehow, but just exactly where and how was foggy. There was an awful long time to think for a moment. Caught in time. She had a sick feeling there had been some dramatic change. “Vanessa?” She hasn’t noticed Royce. How long had he been standing there in the doorway? And had she left the hallway light on? Strange how he cast no shadow, illuminated from behind like an Xmas tree bulb. “It’s time to go.” She’d lost her train of thought. Something had just happened moments before. Someone else had been there. Wait. They still were. Rummaging about, messing up the neat piles of papers on her desk, tipping over her grandmother’s lamp, and smashing a photo on the floor. “Stop,” she yelled, reaching to grasp the villain’s arm. But something was wrong. “He can’t hear you, Vanessa.” Royce stretched out his hand as the hallway light behind him flew forward, absorbing or eliminating everything else. Everything but her. “Are you coming, or not?” Vanessa looked down. Down at herself. On the floor. A small hole in her chest still shimmering with blood. And then she remembered: Royce had died two years earlier. She took his hand thinking: death is too easy. ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Six Time Winner Gora, and Honorable Mentions David and Silver! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! Pass on the great news on Twitter, Facebook, MeWe, shiny mirrors, Morse Code, and signal flags. #ThursThreads – Week 482 – Winners

Week 482 of #ThursThreads had many fantastic tales. What an amazing feat we’ve pulled off. Nine years! If you’ve been doing it a while, thank you for coming back each week. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Mark Ethridge | @mysoulstears Honorable Mention Bill Engleson | @billmelaterplea Katheryn says: There’s something about a gruff older figure helping out the innocent teenager that just pulls on my heartstrings. This piece leaves me wanting to see what made the teen seek the narrator’s help, and how the narrator intends to get around the restrictions to fulfill the assignment. Good job! winner announcement Week 482 Winner David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Katheryn says: This pair can clearly get into all sorts of good trouble! The glimpses of magic and their power, and the edge of adventure, really pulled me into this one. Though it’s a short piece, it felt full of world-building and character. Can’t wait to read more! “Are you coming or not?” Tondra hasn’t moved from the corner of her cell and all I’ve gotten out of her is her name. “Look,” I sigh. “More spirits will be here soon. I want to be gone before that and I’d rather not go alone.” Blasting the doors off our cells and our jailor into the wall had felt good. I’d like to finish the jailor off, but I don’t know how my fellow prisoner would react. I try a different tack. “What’s your power? You saw mine.” “Wind.” “Wind and fire? We’re a winning combination!” I grin. “They took my chair,” she chews the words bitterly. I glance at the open door to our cell block. “Those jerks! You want me to look for it? It’s probably nearby.” Tondra’s face brightens with a revelatory expression. She whistles and then listens. I can’t hear what she’s listening for, but I felt the magic in the whistle. Another whistle and I hear the clatter of wooden wheels over stone. An elegantly carved sturdy wheelchair blows satisfyingly over our prone jailor. I laugh and step out of the way as the chair swerves to a stop next to Tondra. “And we’re off?” As Tondra transitions to her wheelchair, she studies me critically. “How do I know I can trust you?” I shrug. “I don’t know about trust, but I hate spirits enough that as long as it’s us versus them I won’t do anything to compromise our side. That’s a promise.” ~~~~~~~ Congratulations Ten Time Winner David, and Honorable Mention Bill! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! Siobhan Muir’s #ThursThreads Tales from Aug 2021

Welcome to the monthly round up of all my #ThursThreads tales.  It’s currently the end of September. I just celebrated my anniversary to Mr. SM yesterday and we had a marvelous time. Best Anniversary we’ve had in a while. I got to go on a short hike and then we fixed our patio and put in a fire pit to enjoy the fire in the evening. It was marvelous. Most of these bits are of upcoming tales, written to prompts from the #ThursThreads #flashfiction challenge I host each Thursday. We’re starting with Week 474 through Week 477 and I’ve collected them in one place. August had four Thursdays, so you get the four tales along with their dates and prompts. Happy reading! ~~~~~~~~~ Week 474, August 5, 2021 Prompt: “But you don’t know him.” Jamison shot a look a Chayse. His partner stared at the female body with narrowed eyes. “What?” Chayse pointed at the victim’s face. “Does she look familiar to you?” Jamison frowned. “No.” “No, I mean, does she resemble someone you know?” He tilted is head as he scrutinized the bodies. “I don’t think so. Why?” Chayse pointed. “Look at the way her face is done up—like one of those YouTube makeup artists who becomes famous people with makeup application. Doesn’t she look a little like Felicia?” Jamison blinked. The skin was too pale to match Felicia’s rich mocha brown complexion, but the brows and slope of the nose seemed similar. He frowned. “That’s weird. Felicia would never dress like that, but I guess they might look alike.” He shoved the unease to the back of his mind and examined the male vic. “But you don’t know him?” Chayse shook his head. The white man had brown hair and blue eyes turned clouded gray in death. Freckles decorated his cheeks and the bridge of his nose. A small tattoo of an anchor decorated the inside of his left forearm. He looked like he’d spent some time in the gym, but Jamison’s research showed gym muscles didn’t necessarily mean strength. Chayse crouched beside the bodies. “He looks like he may have been a bodybuilder. Any ID on the bodies?” Jamison shrugged. “Nope. Both were clean. Like, literally clean. No blood, no ID, bags, cellphones, or keys.” 245 #SilverStateMystery words ~~~~~~~~~~ Week 475, August 12, 2021 Prompt: “How do you know?” “Gracious evening to you, Mistress Felicia.” Her breath caught once more, and her throat closed. Oh how she wished he truly meant those words. “Good evening, Det. Jamison. It’s good to see you.” Damn, their interaction was always so formal, but though tonight was a private party for the members of the Underground, she and Edgar hadn’t discussed taking their relationship into the lifestyle. He took her hand and kissed the knuckles, sending another sizzle through her. “If you have some time tonight, I’d like to discuss a few things with you privately.” Unease dampened some of the heat and she straightened. “Is something wrong, Detective?” He didn’t answer immediately, but casually turned her hand over and kissed the palm. “No, nothing’s wrong, Mistress.” He pulled her hand to his chest and pressed it there. “I just want some time to discuss this connection you and I have, and how to deepen it.” She tried to curb her rising excitement. “How do you know I want to deepen it?” A short pause and a rise in his heartbeat matched the unease in his eyes. “Don’t you? I – I didn’t come here tonight to push for too much too soon. If you’re not ready—” “Be calm, Detective. I’m thrilled you’re asking for this. I’m sorry my joke fell flat.” She tightened her fingers in his jacket lapel. “I do want to deepen our connection and I will have time as soon as Lady Aislynn returns from her rounds.” 248 #SilverStateMysteries words ~~~~~~~~~~ Week 476, August 19, 2021 Prompt: “You have a question?” “You mentioned a tour of the cool facilities.” She laughed and it zinged through Chester like a burst of adrenaline. “Yes, I’ll show you the pool, hot tub, and sauna that can be used after you bust your ass on the obstacle course through the woods.” He gave her a weak smile. “Oh, good, that too.” She laughed again and started the tour, giving him all the inside stories on how and why each amenity was built. He followed along, enjoying the cadence of her voice and the knowledge of the house. “How do you know so much about this place?” “Well…” Hermoine paused as they headed across the grounds from the obstacle course. “This was my parents’ vacation cabin, and when they decided they were too old for roughing it, they gave it to me. I donated it to the Sirens for a training facility and barracks.” Chester coughed. “This is your parents’ idea of roughing it?” She grimaced and rubbed the back of her neck. “Yeah.” He reined in his incredulity and nodded. “All righty then. I think you’ve really done wonders for the place and made it a great training facility. Top notch. Nicer than all the gyms I’ve been to.” She snorted. “It better be. Okay. Do you have a question, or rather, any questions before we go in for dinner?” “Yeah, just one.” He shifted in front of her and gathered his courage to meet her gaze. “May I kiss you?” 246 #Sirens words ~~~~~~~~~~ Week 477, August 26, 2021 Prompt: “Those are your options.” Why the hell did I agree to this? I’d never needed a man’s help before. I’ve also never been targeted by a professional killer before, either. Of course, I didn’t know if the killer knew I’d been around and found the bodies and the baby, but I couldn’t count on that. “What are we doing?” “Eating breakfast.” He tilted his head. “That’s what it’s still called, right? I mean I know we’ve been apart for thirty years but I’m pretty sure it hasn’t changed.” “Cut the shit, Paul. What…

Ludwig | @DavidALudwig Honorable Mention Mark A. Morris Veronica says: This unfolds like the first few minutes of a crime show. The camera is fixed on a man’s face as he comes into consciousness and then pans out. This isn’t just a catnap. Immediately the stakes jump and then they expand when we learn that she means business and he is caught between a rock and a hard place. The content has an edge to it, but the delivery is smooth and well paced. winner announcement Week 481 Winner Silver James | @SilverJames_ Veronica says: This had such a smooth delivery. The reader is there, hunting this dirty cop along with the main character. The pacing was slow and deliberate, everything we’d expect a wolf hunt to be. A bit of a dark hero, the main character is controlled and fully aware of his purpose. In the beginning he is the defender, but the last paragraph gives him a darker edge. Despite being short, this felt like a much bigger scene. Furious, Devlin followed his target, his wolf’s claws barely leashed. He’d overheard the argument, recognized the sound of flesh on flesh and the painful cry that followed. He had a job and it wasn’t breaking into that house to make sure the pretty woman who lived there was okay. So now he watched the sleazeball harass the girls working the stroll on Kneeland Street from his hidden position. The arse was an infinite tool. It wasn’t a question of who or how. No, it was simply a question of when. Tommy Gallagher was a dead man walking. Because Devlin would kill the corrupt cop and feel not an ounce of guilt. He’d happily put a bullet between the bastard’s eyes. Gallagher grabbed the prostitute’s ass as she tried to squeeze past him and Dev tensed. Not yet. He couldn’t end the man yet. Not until Ronan and Brian gave the go-ahead. They had plans and taking matters into his own hands would only screw things up. So he watched. And waited. And bid his time. His thoughts turned to Gallagher’s wife. She’d be better off without him but did she love him so much that she wouldn’t leave him? They’d been married in the Church and she went to mass every Sunday. Dev knew this because he followed her too. So was it death do they part? His wolf clawed at his insides, no longer a patient hunter. “Soon,” he whispered to his inner beast. And the woman. “That’s a promise.” ~~~~~~~ Congratulations FIFTY-FOUR TIME WINNER Silver, and Honorable Mention Mark! Don’t forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it! Pass on the great news on Twitter, Facebook, MeWe, shiny mirrors, Morse Code, and signal flags. Check out all the original tales HERE. I’m wanting more. “You could stay.” Maura’s head jerked. She stared at Ronan. This man… He was such a…man. All man. What did the romance novels call a male like him? Alpha. Oh, yes, he was totally an alpha. Large and in charge. Always in control. Of his world. His men. His life. His emotions. But the timbre of his voice, the fleeting plea in his eyes rocked her. He sounded unsure, a first since their initial encounter. Ronan O’Connor was a hard man. She’d found no give in him. Ever. He was a criminal. She didn’t want to consider how much blood he had on his hands—figuratively or literally. She was fairly certain there was plenty of both. Yet here he stood in his impeccably decorated townhouse looking like… Not a boy. His face was too sculpted with defining planes and a hard jaw.
